US President Donald Trump says he will impose additional tariffs on China, from Tuesday, if Beijing does not withdraw its 34% retaliatory tariffs on the US.

The additional tariffs on Beijing would be of 50%, Trump says.

As a reminder, China announced on Friday that it would be imposing such tariffs on Washington after the White House said that from 9 April it'd put 34% levies on all goods from Beijing.

Written as if China's only levy against the U.S. is the new one because it's "retaliatory". Like we're all supposed to forget the harsh tariff and import rules China has had on the U.S. for years.

That'd be like saying Japan retaliated for the Doolittle Raid.

Both sides want to save face.

We’ll see who blinks first. Someone will.

Trump’s goal is to first remove China almost entirely from the US market, and then attempt to isolate China internationally.

For its part, China believes it can/will isolate itself from the USA market, so they will not back down.

At some point, Trump may make deals with EU, or Vietnam, etc... - but with China? There will be a new Cold War.

I don’t see Trump blinking first.

I don't see China blinking either.

I think both sides are ready to accept the consequences, for good or ill, of commercial relations reduced to near zero.

Yes. Things will break. To what extent is an unknown.

But as also posted earlier “Make the choice, own the choice”. That includes President Trump, Premier Xi, Congress.

I b believe it will come down to if voters believe they are better off financially in 2026 than they were in 2024.

Why not do a tiny bit of research

What was the trade deficit between the USA and China in 2023?

AI:In 2023, the trade deficit between the United States and China was approximately $279.1 billion. This figure represents the difference between U.S. exports to China, which totaled $147.8 billion, and imports from China, which amounted to $426.9 billion
