If it leads the rest of the world to no tariffs it’s more than ok.

If you want to get rid of the income tax keep the tariffs. Congress meets every October 1 to decide what the consumption/sin taxes will be for the next 2 years.

Imposing tariffs can make others retaliate

Trump only imposed tariffs on countries that have tariffs on American imports. It's just that 160 countries levy tariffs on American imports.

Free traders in a mercantilist world? Trade cucks.
Change my mind, dogmatic free traders. Another 15 years and there would be zero manufacturing base in this country.
Americans want to consume, but we want to produce also.
Oh, maybe we can all work in finance, insurance, real estate and Only Fans.

My father was in the steel industry the amount of dumping the Chinese and Canadians did killed hundreds of thousands of manufacturing jobs. What he is doing is downright heroic.

IMNSHO: The vast majority of people are having kittens over the tariffs because your average person has the attention span of a GNAT and has no understanding of how either delayed gratification and/or the economy even works. Or that tariffs are a big old CLUB/Bargaining Tool.

Thank your nearest Socialist Democrat for that! (And I’ll even throw in the random pocket-lining RINO for ya to chew on, too!)

HOWEVER - it’s VERY HARD to discount the opinion of Thomas Sowell, one of my all-time heroes and he disagrees with the tariffs. IF, in fact, he actually SAID that in the interview - which I have not listened to. ;)

Those who argue that today’s tariffs will cause a depression are full of hot air and TDS. The Smoot-Hawley tariffs of 1930 failed, but that was a totally different economic system. The U.S. had huge trade surpluses at the time and was overproducing goods.

Dimocrat politicians have been making American workers unemployed and lazy for more than forty years by outsourcing our industries and jobs to foreign countries. We need the security of being able to feed, clothe, equip and transport ourselves without relying on foreigners.

We will find out. After having to pay VAT taxes in other countries, which are tariffs themselves, I say it is time to experiment with them.

People forget that prior to having an income tax, we used to “pay the bills” through tariffs. In short, I don’t think going cold turkey to import tariffs is going to hurt that much. Being able to buy $50 Chinese microwaves at Walmart has hurt us way more than it helped us.

While the tariffs are clearly warranted its the execution of the plan to address the imbalances that is questionable. Why couldn’t the tariffs have been ratcheted up over time instead of going with the Big Bang approach?

A lot of people will be shocked at the sudden drops in their retirement assets even though the market was overvalued and overdue for a correctio. Those who have a strategy of selling assets to fund retirement (as opposed to those who live off of distributions) are going to get hurt by having to sell low, at least for awhile.

I don’t think a more gradual recalibration of tariffs would have been as disruptive. JMHO

What is interesting is that we are in a situation no one has ever been in before, globally, economically.

To that end, there can be absolutely zero predictions that will be accurate.

So, why the hubbub bub ? Is it hugh and series ? Who TF knows. Will it be awesome ?? Who TF knows.

“We need the security of being able to feed, clothe, equip and transport ourselves without relying on foreigners.”
Most Democrats will string you up for saying that.

Trump’s tariffs are just part of a multifaceted and connected plan. The question is whether the plan as a whole will work.

Tariffs are the only way to get value from other countries supplying the enormous over consumption by US consumers. If we used the same amount of running shoes and hemorrhoid cream as they do everywhere else it would not matter. But it does matter. So either we will get credit for being the market for the World’s production or we will die which is where we have been going.
