Estonian MPs pass bill to limit voting rights for Russian minority

Estonian lawmakers voted Wednesday to ban non-EU residents from voting in local elections, a move aimed at the large number of Russian citizens living in the Baltic state as it warily eyes Moscow.

The amendment was proposed in response to security concerns over Russia's war in Ukraine. Estonia has been a steadfast supporter of Kyiv since the invasion in February 2022.

In the vote on Wednesday, 93 lawmakers in the 101-seat chamber backed a constitutional amendment to impose the restrictions, a result that was met with applause from MPs.

Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal hailed the outcome as "a victory for all", adding on X: "The decisions in our local life won't be made by the citizens of the aggressor states, but we'll decide by ourselves."

Nearly 80,000 Russian citizens hold a residence permit in the former Soviet republic of 1.3 million people, which regained its independence in 1991. Estonia does not recognise dual-citizenship.

There are also nearly 60,000 people left stateless after the fall of the Soviet Union.

The restrictions, if signed into law by Estonia's president, would ban non-EU citizens from voting and allow the stateless residents to go to polls one last time in local elections in October.

But the mayor of Narva, a predominantly Russian-speaking town on the border with Russia, lamented the lawmakers' decision.

Permanent residents of Estonia currently have a constitutional right to vote in local elections, but not general elections.

[snip] When Estonia gained independence from the Soviet Union, around a third of the people living on its territory were from Russian-speaking minorities whose families had immigrated from other Soviet republics.

They did not qualify for citizenship because of a lack of blood ties to Estonia. Citizenship also requires applicants to pass an Estonian language test.

But somehow the EU globalists (and the RC Church) expects the USA to have open boarders and allow illegal immigrants to vote in our elections and receive government aid from US citizens.

Lawless hypocrites.

Can we guess where this is going?

Sudetenland anybody?

Just keep poking the Russian bear...yes it is an old, arthritic dying bear with very few teeth left.....but yeah, we “mighty 900,000 pure bloods” are up to it!

Especially backed by NATO and in their arrogance and our ignorance, the US.

These 900k bigots are also 70% atheist.

It is all just woke acceptable ethnic cleansing. The domiciled of Russian blood were never given the option of citizenship as there is an Estonian blood test required.

Yes, these “Russ among us” is a security risk.....but the whole flipping country is not sustainable...too much land....too few people....bad neighborhood.

Sad, but facts are seldom kind.

For two millennia, Europe has been nothing but midgets knife-fighting each other in a phone booth.

We need to gun up and get shed of these losers.

But what did George Washington know?

They have been warned for almost two decades that they would have to learn Estonian to maintain citizenship.

Many younger ethnic Russians have. The pensioners, not so much.

I know ethnic Russian Estonians and people who are part Russian, part Estonian.

These are all under 40 year olds, they all speak Estonian (and fluent English) and they all, unequivocally, do not want to be part of Muscowy. They also all have Estonian citizenship.

This new move by the Estonian parliament is about pensioners who came from Russia and refuse to learn Estonian

Tell yourself what you have to about your fake European “democracies”.

Ask Calin Georgescu in Romania and Marine LePen in France how “democracy” is working out for them.

Why won't the punk in the green t-shirt in Ukraine hold elections?

He ceased to be the president of Ukraine last year.

Europe keeps telling us about democracy while restricting it in their own countries...

Exactly - there is no "democracy" in Europe [except for Hungary and Slovakia] and no "democracy" in The Ukraine.

The parliament of Ukraine declared martial law because your President Putin occupies about 20% of Ukraine, preventing 3 t0 4 million Ukrainians from voting.

The reason for Ukraine to be under martial law is because Muscowy invaded Ukraine and occupies territory.

There is no democracy in the Russian federation where a dictator - Putin - has ruled for 26 years.

Do you agree with that? Are you able to type that out without alarm bells going off?
