The Democrats Are in Denial About 2024
The New York Times ^ | March 29, 2025, 7:00 a.m. ET | The Editorial Board

Last year’s election was close, despite President Trump’s hyperbolic claims about his margin of victory. Still, the Democratic Party clearly lost — and not only the presidential race. It also lost control of the Senate and failed to recapture the House of Representatives. Of the 11 governor’s races held last year, Democrats won three. In state legislature races, they won fewer than 45 percent of the seats.

In the aftermath of this comprehensive defeat, many party leaders have decided that they do not need to make significant changes to their policies or their message. They have instead settled on a convenient explanation for their plight.

That explanation starts with the notion that Democrats were merely the unlucky victims of postpandemic inflation and that their party is more popular than it seems: If Democrats could only communicate better, particularly on social media and podcasts, the party would be fine. “We’ve got the right message,” Ken Martin, the new chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said while campaigning for the job. “What we need to do is connect it back with the voters.”

A key part of this argument involves voter turnout. Party leaders claim that most Americans still prefer Democrats but that voter apathy allowed Mr. Trump to win. According to this logic, Democrats do not need to worry about winning back Trump voters and should instead try to animate the country’s natural liberal majority. “I don’t think we’re going to win over those 77 million that voted for Donald Trump,” Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, the party’s 2024 vice-presidential nominee, said this month. “I’m concerned with the 90 million who stayed home.” It was an unfortunate echo of Hillary Clinton saying that millions of Trump voters were “deplorables” and “irredeemable.”

As comforting as these explanations may feel to...

They’re already fundraising and the idiots they stole the 1.5 billion from are coming off the big bucks again. I thought these boneheads said they were “college educated.” They sound pretty stupid to me.

I agree 110% with democrats on this. They are exactly right. Don’t change a thing.

The Democrats just refuse to understand or to admit what they surely realize is the truth.

I am not a big Trump fan. Yet I voted for him three times, because the alternative was incredibly, incredibly bad. There are millions just like me.

Unless they come to understand that dynamic, they will remain in the dumpster.

Only Gavin Newsom appear to realize what is going on. He’s being a snake.

"What we need to do is connect it back with the voters."

Oh, I think they have been connecting alright.

“We can’t get our message out” deja vu all over again.

He’s being a snake.

Quite a few shape-shifters are slithering out of the woodwork.

The ability to fund their left wing agenda is going to be more difficult as President Trump and DOGE shuts down one slush fund after another.

We have yet seen any criminal charges brought from the flow of money to various NGOs. There can not be this much mismanagement and lack of oversight without some crime being committed. I suspect the DOJ wants to be very careful before bringing the first charges.

The 2026 midterms may show just how strong the Democrat party is.

The Dems lost young men in three demo groups: Black, Whyte and Latino. Those young men are happy to see Trump rampaging through the Federal corruption machinery.

They’re likely not swinging back toward AOC,Kamala,Bernie or Gavin.

The Democrats must bow to the money that controls the political system is where this editorial leads us to.

Of course future Democrat messaging must reflect where majority opinion is once the money is collected from ‘fat cats’.

Israel was attacked on October 7th and as a result AOC and any other Democrat who wants to be POTUS will have to drop their pants and get the Star of David tattoo put on them.

There is a reason that snakes are among the most ancient of creatures...

I know we are discussing political survival, but it is hard to ignore the persistent thought that it is more related to PT Barnum’s observation that a sucker is born every minute!

If it weren’t so vital to the health of our nation to have at least two parties with opposing rational ideas of good government, it would be hilarious.

I was listening to a replay of some Leftist talking heads, and they were all bemoaning the fact that all the things that we see as improvements since Trump took office are in fact, the direct result of things Biden “did” (the scare quotes are intentional) when he was in office.

I nearly fell out of my chair. I thought “They aren’t really going there, are they?”

They are. Gaslighting themselves.

Last year’s election was close, despite President Trump’s hyperbolic claims about his margin of victory.

This is what "close" looks like to the NYT.

Too many on our side dismiss the rats as being dumb. They say the fact that the rats have not moderated proves it. This is wrong. Despite a republican Presidential landslide the rats came close to stealing the House. The Dems believe they have to cheat just a little bit more they will be back in power. To that end they have poured 25 million dollars into next week’s Wi SC election. If the rat wins it will end up costing us 3 or 4 House seats.

The rats who are in charge are not dumb. They may be evil, but they are not dumb. They dishonestly campaign as moderate, almost conservative, in purple areas. If they win, they governor as complete leftist.
