Putin says Trump plans for Greenland 'has nothing to do' with Russia

Speaking from the Arctic as Vice President JD Vance prepared for his trip to Greenland to assess U.S. security concerns, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Washington’s ambitions for the Arctic nation had "nothing to do" with Russia.

"In short, America's plans in relation to Greenland are serious," Putin said Thursday during an address to Russia's Arctic Forum in Murmansk.

"These plans have deep historical roots," he continued, according to a BBC report. "And it's clear that the US will continue to systematically pursue its geo-strategic, military-political and economic interests in the Arctic.

"As for Greenland, this is a matter for two specific countries," he added. "It has nothing to do with us."

Trump could say the same for Ukraine.

Just getting there first. Putin would try to take control of Greenland (which is not so terribly far away from the Russian Federation) to exert hegemony over the North Atlantic. Also for air routes to the rest of the Northern Hemisphere.

The US in control would stymie both the expansion of Russia and China, it would open up some valuable mineral deposits in the near geographic area.

Can someone please tell me what the reasoning is?

What is our goal regards Greenland?

Keep it free of Chinese control.

The immediate goal is to make sure China stays out. They’ve been trying to get mining concessions combined with a seaport there. They have openly asserted that they are an Arctic power and should have a role to play. Trump is moving to ace them out.

had "nothing to do" with Russia.

Except that they would rather have Russia than the US.

Having closer ties with Greenland would be great. Threatening to take over Greenland is bizarre and actually makes our security more delicate. Losing the support of allies outflanks any benefit from conquering Greenland. My two cents.

I agree completely. There’s no reason why we can’t just have a North American defense treaty with Greenland and Canada.

The US is already very large culturally, too large in some people’s opinion, and adding new territories that are not part of our culture is probably not in our best interest.

1. If we don't, China and/or Russia will have influence and a presence in Greenland. The Arctic is the last arena for defense/mineral exploration and exploitation and the Russians have a 40 year jump on us (we have exactly one (1) Icebreaker).

2. Greenland's location controls the North Atlantic and is a main interdiction/warning point of ICBMs bound for US territory.

3. Greenland has enormous economic potential for minerals, fisheries, and possibly oil.

4.Greenland is part of the American continent, and itty bitty Denmark has no interest in Greenland, except as a withered and abandoned colony.

Counter China.

Makes sense.

Thx

I intentionally looked back a bit in time, since I don’t want recent articles that merely rationalize current political maneuvers.

Indeed, this goes back: https://www.thearcticinstitute.org/tortuous-path-china-win-win-strategy-greenland/

Roughly 2018 was the starting point with China openly stating a new long term policy that seeks to dramatically increase their influence in the Arctic.

So we are countering our only true near peer, China.

I am a little bit of a pessimist, so I’ll throw in my negative doom and gloom world and life view (LOL). I don’t think we can stop China’s accent. Slowdown maybe, but not stop. At this point we no longer have control and they are frankly to big, trading on the global stage (we are only ~25%). They have aggressive growth oriented industrial and economic policies, while we squander billions on sex changes.

Trump is about the only one that addresses this, he did in his last presidency as well. But once he’s gone, it’s a return to the uni-party establishment treason where our politicians sell us out so Amazon, Walmart, HP, Dell and GM have cheap labor.

“Losing the support of allies outflanks any benefit from conquering Greenland. My two cents.”

What allies? They don’t support us much anyway. They won’t even support us in meaningless UN votes.

China invests in its target countries building seaports and railroads while we were funding gay comic books. :)

Sarcasm but literally the truth.

The world is still built of concrete and steel. It is powered by coal and oil. It’s men with their toxic masculinity, wearing hard hats, that still make it all happen.

China already has a large mining consortium active in Greenland.

Last real poll was 30,000 for US and 20,000 against - from a population that has dwindled to 53,000 as of Jan 1, 2025

adding new territories that are not part of our culture is probably not in our best interest.

We must immediately return Alaska to Russia and the Louisiana Purchase to France, followed by returning all Indian lands bought by the US. Then let go of Hawaii, Guam, the Pacific territories, Puerto Rico, etc.

Now that would be culturally correct, right?
