Americans are less likely to see Canada and the U.S. as close allies than they were two years ago, the latest indication that President Donald Trump's tariff threats and talk of taking over a neighboring ally are souring a critical economic and military relationship.
The U.S. shift in viewpoint comes primarily from Democrats, though Republicans are less likely to see Canada as America’s ally now too, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. While about 7 in 10 Democrats saw Canada and the U.S. as close allies before Trump returned to office, now that number is down to about half. For Republicans, the number dropped from 55% to 44%.
Although most still see the countries’ relationship as at least “friendly,” just under half of U.S. adults now consider the U.S. to be “close allies” with its neighbor to the north. That’s down from about 6 in 10 in a Pearson Institute/AP-NORC poll conducted in September 2023.
“He’s turning everybody against us,” bemoaned Lynn Huster, 73, a lifelong Democrat who lives in York, Pennsylvania. Huster says she has been dismayed by Trump’s actions and how they have affected relationships with other allies, including the United Kingdom.

Canadian truckers run up and down the Northway - which connects Albany to Canada - very rude drivers and I’ve witnessed many unsafe moves.
I haven’t had a good view of Canadians since I got to know a few of them in grad school. From what I can tell, they all hate the US, Israel, and shampoo.

WTH would you expect from a clueless lifelong rat. Newsmax has plenty of never Trumpers.
Canada is a big nothing burger. They produce syrup and Molson. Vermont produces syrup and there are 20+ American beers that tastes better than Molson

So some random, meaningless loser in RustedOut PA is worried about how the rest of the world “feels” about us?
Guess those empty factories and closed mines all around her don’t mean anything. Must be a federal “worker”, immune to all the carnage.
We have more of everything and don’t actually need them...
Well if they want to be "close allies"...maybe they should stop raping us (and their own citizens) with the outrageous tariffs they put on US goods.
Everything costs more in Canada.
I feel very unfortunate about this. I’ve enjoyed my recent trips to the United States (CA, VA, DC, WV, PA, etc) and want to continue doing so. Plus I like picking up a few things shipped to my address in Ogdensburg, NY and wandering around the area for that little bit. It basically has a lot to do with the former PM who had that opportunity to deal with both Biden and Trump in that more thoughtful and constructive manner concerning those issues. My views are not that fashionable among my peers and family up here, but I certainly do not carry around that sort of smugness.
They should even up on the tariffs .
It just seems so reasonable.
They are criminally addicted to ripping us off, &&&& them!!
When I was trucking I had a load from Virginia to outside of Montreal and back. The treatment American truckers get at the border and at the Canadian distribution centers is very bad. Truckers have to keep moving to make money. The delays they cause make it not worth the job. Not to mention the nasty attitude they have. I never took another Canadian load after that.
Nothing personal, I have Canadian relatives whom are quite obtuse about their own government, it just must be unfortunate coincidences, according to them.
I ceased viewing Canada as an ally during COVID.
Their reaction—especially to the truckers’ strike—was right out of the CCP playbook.
Many years ago I worked up in Canada. Alberta, Toronto, Montreal very short, and New Brunswick. Alberta was just like Arizona without tans, Toronto and Montreal was like New York City, and New Brunswick was like rural New York.
they are economic competitors
they are squealing like a stuck pig
cuz Trump is calling them out on not playing fair
I have dealt with Canadians in the lumber industry for 40 years. Generally I find that they tend to be more liberal than us. Whether they are from BC or ON or NB or PQ.
I generally find the people from out west are better than the eastern folks. The Quebec French are the worst for having a chip on their shoulder. The rural BC & AB are not that much different than the people across the border in ID or MT or eastern WA.
It still tends to be a rural vs city attitude. City people in Vancouver are a lot more liberal than people that live out in the bush. Just like the average Toronto resident is more liberal than someone from Hearst, Ontario.
I went to a number of academic conferences in Canada which were mostly good experiences, but I did find their occasional comments on American politics very annoying. I have avoided the country since Trump’s first election.

I reside in Oregon and while I’m not in the wood products industry, your assessment is “spot on.”

I’d rather go to Mexico.
I don’t understand their language and can just drink & catch some sun.
I loved visiting Canada. We went there on our year-late honeymoon. My family often used it as the shortcut to the U.S. East Coast on vacations.
My husband and I both have roots there: His grandfather was from Nova Scotia. My 10 time (?) grandmother was a fille du roi and my great-grandmother was from Ontario. MZY husband’s great uncle died at Vischy Ridge. WW1 at age 17 (Canadian Military). Michiganders often have Canadian ancestors.
Canada has gone so woke that I don’t think we would go searching for family any time soon.
