British Steel warns of 2,700 job losses from blast furnace closures

China-owned British Steel said it could close its two blast furnaces as soon as June with the potential loss of up to 2,700 jobs, as U.S. tariffs and environmental costs threaten to damage its already struggling operations.

British Steel, owned by China's Jingye Group, has warned for years that steelmaking in Scunthorpe, north east England, is loss-making, and has been in talks with the government for months about securing funding to switch to a greener type of steel production.

But the two sides have failed to reach a deal, and British Steel said on Thursday it was making the "difficult decision" to start a consultation over the closure of its blast furnaces and other related operations.

The threatened closures are the culmination of decades of decline in Britain's steel industry, which has struggled to compete with low-cost imports given the high energy costs of domestic production.

"The blast furnaces and steelmaking operations are no longer financially sustainable due to highly challenging market conditions, the imposition of tariffs, and higher environmental costs relating to the production of high-carbon steel," British Steel said in a statement on Thursday.

higher environmental costs relating to the production of high-carbon steel,
= = =

Better make low- or none- carbon steel, then.

Bad carbon, bad, bad.

The environmental problems of making high carbon steel can easily be solved by moving production to China.

We all know carbon dioxide from China doesn’t cause climate change the way carbon dioxide from Western nations does.

If the US were really aggressive and nationalistic Now is the time for USX to hit them with all Stock offer, with the promise of no US Tariffs for a quick no regulator standing in the way closing of the deal.

Instead, the UK Labor government will write a 7 billion dollar check.

The western green movement has morphed into a messianic death cult and must be destroyed.

All part of the plan. They buy industries here, let them fail, move production to China “to be more efficient”. Now you are dependent on them and forbid you need steel to build defense components or infrastructure, they control that over an ocean.

We, in our stupidity are doing that here.

“China-owned British Steel said it could close its two blast furnaces as soon as June with the potential loss of up to 2,700 jobs, as U.S. tariffs and environmental costs threaten to damage its already struggling operations.”

Maybe Trump could have/would have exempted British Steel from the new tariffs if it was not owned by the CCP.

On this news, Trump shpuld offer the U.K. help to have a merged U.S. Steel/Nippon Steel takeover of British Steel, and then exempt it from the tariffs.

Gee. Communist Chinese scumbags are all onboard with helping dumbass westerners make "greener" steel.

How generous at them.

While they pollute China every day with the worst environmentally-wise steelmaking they can conjure up.

I wonder if they’d take a few “district judges” off of our hands.

Sing with me!

Chorus: Green, green, it's green they say
At the British steel mill.
Green, green, they're goin' away
To climate change that's greener still.

Verse: Well, I told my mama on the day I was born,
Don'tcha cry when that steel mill is gone.
You know, there ain't but heaping piles of Lefty scorn.
Loss just gotta be movin' on.... A-singin'

Chorus: Green, green, it's green they say
At the British steel mill.
Green, green, they're goin' away
To climate change that's greener still.
