L.A. Faces ‘Inevitable’ Layoffs of Thousands of City Employees Due $1 Billion Deficit

The City of Los Angeles is bracing for layoffs of thousands of municipal employees due to a budget crisis that is said to be “inevitable,” as the city is reeling from recent wildfires and still preparing to host the 2028 Summer Olympics.

The Los Angeles Times reported:

L.A.’s financial problems exploded into a full-blown crisis on Wednesday, with the city’s top budget official announcing that next year’s shortfall is now just shy of $1 billion, making layoffs “nearly inevitable.” City Administrative Officer Matt Szabo advised the City Council to focus on cost-cutting measures, including a potential reduction in the size of the workforce, to bring the budget into balance for 2025-26.

Szabo, in his presentation to the council Wednesday, attributed the city’s financial woes, in part, to increased spending on legal payouts, which have ballooned over the past few years. Tax revenues have been coming in much weaker than expected — and are expected to soften further in the upcoming budget year, which starts July 1.

Mayor Karen Bass put a positive spin on the shortfall, issuing a press statement hailing the opportunity to make “fundamental change in the way the City operates” and promising to “reduce spending significantly while protecting essential services.” Bass blamed the Palisades Fire, which not only required more emergency spending, but also reduced the city’s property tax base. She called for “sweeping structural reform of the City’s budget and operations.”

Guessing there won’t be any semi-retired Federal judges getting in the way of this.

Tax revenues have been coming in much weaker than expected

and what does the City think will happen to tax revenues after they burned down over 7,000 expensive homes, destroying that source of taxes?

Back in 2024 the Los Angeles city council declared LA to be a sanctuary city.

I guess that move didn’t do much for the city’s finances. Is there such a thing as a “super sanctuary city”? If so, maybe LA should give that a try.

🤔

Fun fact: There are no Republicans on LA’s city council. Not even one.

You know that if Trump was Mayor there would be suit after suit filed over the fire, lack of water, fire department issues, lack of funding, etc. Gee Liberals don’t lawsuits apply to both sides?

Wonder when a judge will order those layoffs overturned and demand the workers get reinstated?

THIS is how the one-party, neo-marxist governments in California, New York, and Illinois will be taken-down and reformed

MONEY - cut off their vast patronage and crony networks supporting woke government.

A judge in Texas needs to issue an order preventing them from laying off anyone!

Excellent!!!

A commercial needs to air in LA with a laid off worker complaining that the city prefers to pay illegals rather than employees.

Not surprised in a “sanctuary” city with an untold number of illegals - given billions in free medical care and other perks - while Pacific Palisades reservoir went empty for over a year, hydrants ran dry, brush was not cleared out - and 100 fire trucks were out of commission b/c there was “not enough money to fix them.”

Good of LA to burn out its tax base - I suspect Bass figured the feds would bail her out.

It is hopeless. LA will re-elect the likes of no-nothing Karen Bass over business men like Rick Caruso.
