'Great uncertainty': UC system orders hiring freeze amid steep Trump cuts

The University of California announced a systemwide hiring freeze as the Trump administration threatens to dramatically slash its funding.

In a Wednesday statement, UC President Michael Drake said university leaders are preparing for “significant financial challenges ahead.” He also instructed every UC campus to create individual plans to cut and conserve costs as state and federal budget cuts loom, such as delaying maintenance and cutting back on business travel.

Some of the executive orders and proposed policy changes by President Donald Trump have threatened the institution’s “lifesaving research, patient care, and education support,” Drake said. On the state level, the 2025-26 California budget is poised to cut the UC’s funding by $271 million.

The UC system’s hiring freeze comes amid similar pauses at major universities. Stanford University, Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology have already implemented their own hiring freezes amid funding threats. UC San Diego independently announced its own hiring freeze last month, as the National Institutes of Health withdrew over $150 million in funding for the university, putting its federally funded research at risk.

The financial crisis also comes as the Trump administration recently targeted several schools, including UC Berkeley and UCLA, for additional reductions. Trump officials said they might pull funding from universities if it’s determined that they allowed antisemitism on their campuses.

The administration claims that Jewish individuals, especially students, were targets of “intimidation, vandalism, and violence” as students held pro-Palestine protests in response to the killings in Gaza.

Maybe make the Profs actually teach class vs having a TA teach. But then that might make it worse as these Profs are libs.

UC could use its Endowment Fund
8/24
The latest gains bring the total investment portfolio to $180 billion, a $16 billion increase over the previous year. The value of the University’s investment assets has doubled over the past 10 years.

And then this fall there is the “enrollment cliff” at colleges, which the Enemedia will blame on Trump, like he was President during the Great Recession of 2007-8.

I’m hopeful his “uncertainty” turns to “certainty” that his federal funding is over.

I attended Cal State, but am familiar with the UC system. America would be much better served if both systems simply collapsed and was resurrected/remade by conservatives.

If people knew how much a) tax money went into those two and b) how much of that money was spent corrupting young people, they would be greatly horrified.

Imagine that, The UC system is actually being asked to supervise and manage their Campuses in a financial sound manner. How novel. God forbid they may have to dip into their 31 billion in endowments which grew 12% this last year.

UC Berkeley tuition is now $16,832. In the nineteen fifties it ws $36. The athletic card cost more, at something like $54. And professors actually taught undergraduate classes.

It’s the University of California, one of the top 10 economies in the world. I mean even with the entire rest of the USA to compete with, they are still Top 10. They should be able to support their own university?

to be fair, some of what comes out of universities is actually legitimate (scientific research, anything STEM-related, etc.)

but I agree in the sense that none of it should be taxpayer-subsidized.

Get ready for massive tuition hikes - and the UCs letting in even more Chinese students - who pay triple the tuition rate and often pay upfront and in cash, which the university loves.

I’m sure there are plenty of billionaire Jewish donors who have rightfully snapped shut their wallets as well.
