NEW YORK (AP) — The Trump administration’s recent changes to student loans are causing frustration and confusion for some borrowers.
In response to a February court ruling that blocked some Biden-era programs, the Education Department has taken down online and paper applications for income-driven repayment plans.
“This especially hurts anyone who’s lost their jobs, including federal workers,” said Natalia Abrams, founder and president of the Student Debt Crisis Center. “A few months ago, they would have been able to get on a zero-dollar income-driven repayment plan.”
Adding to the uncertainty are layoffs at the Education Department, which oversees the federal loan system. The federal website for student loans and financial aid, StudentAid.gov, suffered an hours-long outage Wednesday, but the department has said it will continue to deliver on its commitments.
“It’s been wave after wave of bad news for student borrowers,” said Aissa Canchola Bañez, policy director at the Student Borrower Protection Center.

They need to know their sugar daddy has been removed from the Oval Office.
Imagine how “confusing” and “frustrating” this is to taxpayers who have to pay their own bills.
The rest of us have to pay our obligations.
Due to complicated family situation I ended up with student loans 10 years ago. Was using many of the programs to delay it so I could focus on other priorities. But now the cows have come home so I will take responsibility and get these loans paid off. I would hope after this is all done they consider dropping student loans for everyone. It’s a horrible scam on people. Student loans are about as safe and trustworthy as payday loans.
It pleases me to think that the boards at innumerable higher education facilities are wringing their hands over the looming threat to their slush fund systems (tuitions, grants, etc.) for lousy, biased product and cushy liberal careers funding a very comfortable retirement.
It should force a free market correction, but I think only if we get Vance in ‘28.
We need to end this fiction of a student loan program. In say fiction because it seems very few now actually pay back the so called loans.
It seems the time has passed for government service to pay off debt. People are too old and have established lives to go to work doing peace corps type work.
Federal workers are getting a nice severance package I believe it’s 3 months and/or a week per year of service. They certainly should be able to find a job before that with all the open jobs out there
New rule: No student loans for students seeking degrees ending in “-studies.”
Let’s see, not that I lump you into this group... but the average college student did not achieve grades indicative of success their freshman year in any college. However, if you are willing to take out a loan, the schools will accommodate you and allow you to “cooperate and graduate”, e.g., go woke and pass; let on you have any logic in your brain and you are failed out of classes while those who can barely sound out the papers they read which they turned in and cannot pronounce six letter words in their homework....
The loans need to be secured by the schools who take all the risk for the students paying them back... and that will require these students to pass classes with actual academic achievement.
You are doing the right thing.
A “zero-dollar income-driven repayment plan.”
Are those available for my mortgage? I would love to write my check for “$0.00” and add a memo line “Monthly mortgage payment.”
Life happens. But I’m glad that you will pay them back. Age and wisdom help too.
The government should not be in the student loan business at all.
“This especially hurts anyone who’s lost their jobs”
What idiots! Trump is bringing back jobs!
Obama nationalized student lending. Government has no business being in the lending business.
Has there ever been any government (at any level) program that involved loans, guarantees, grants, tax credits, etc. that hasn’t suffered massive abuse. I can’t think of one, and the longer they exist the worse and more flagrant the abuse becomes. It seems government shouldn’t be doing any of this since they allow such abuse to take place with impugnity.
EXACTLY
HOW ABOUT THE MILLIONS OF USA CITIZENS THAT NEVER HAD A STUDENT LOAN???
WE EITHER PAID OUR OWN WAY THRU WHATEVER SCHOOLING PAST HS THAT WE GOT-—OR WE DIDN’T EVEN GET THAT.
We paid our car loans, Mortgages, rent, etc.
We worked long hours & OFTEN worked 2 jobs.
WHEN WE DID GO TO SCHOOL BEYOND HS-—WE STUDIED THINGS LIKE ENGINEERING & ACCOUNTING-—NOT THE STUDY OF OLD ENGLISH ART.
WE HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE GROWTH & SUCCESS OF THE USA——
AND WE WERE PAYING TAXES THAT WERE SUCKED UP BY STUDENT LOANS-—MANY OF WHICH HAVE NOT BEEN REPAID..
PERHAPS BIDEN SHOULD HAVE FINANCED THOSE LOANS WITH ALL THE FAMILY CORRUPTION HE ORGANIZED.
Hence, all such funds expended must be recovered. stat
