When a couple from Colombia who was planning their wedding showed up for a check-in with U.S. immigration authorities, one was given his next appointment date. The other was detained and deported.
Jhojan doesn’t know why Felipe was detained at the Feb. 5 appointment with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. But Jhojan was so worried after Felipe’s deportation that he didn’t show up for his next check-in a month later. Jhojan insisted The Associated Press withhold the couple’s last names, fearing retribution.
He is among many people who now fear that once-routine immigration check-ins will be used as an opportunity to detain them. The appointments have become a source of anxiety as President Donald Trump presses ahead with a campaign of mass deportations and the number of people in ICE custody has reached its highest level since November 2019.
The check-ins are how ICE keeps track of some people who are released by the government to pursue asylum or other immigration cases as they make their way through a backlogged court system.
“If you show up, they’ll deport you. If you don’t, they’ll deport you, too,” Jhojan, 23, told the AP this week.
With the federal government releasing little information, it’s hard to sort out facts from rumors as fears run rampant in many immigrant communities.

“Felipe” is traditionally a male name though AI (for whatever that might be worth) claims it can be assigned to a female
Look at the big brain on Jhojan!
So...this is really a very simple calculus.
Are you here LEGALLY?
Are you within the TERMS OF YOUR VISA?
If yes to both, you can stay.
If NO to either, you should be deported.
Stop all the hand wringing and gnashing of teeth. Self deportation MAY preserve your ability to apply for LEGAL admission to this country.
There’s a relatively simple way for the subjects of this little narrative to fix all this.
They can simply go home. Problem solved.
Maybe one percent of them are actual refugees. The rest are merely engaging in a scam.
What? Did the ASS Press get up early or something this morning?
An immigrant from Ecuador who is in his 20s is among the asylum-seekers who have been detained, according to attorney Rosa Barreca.
It happened at the man’s first check-in, on Feb. 3. The man had turned himself in to border agents after entering the U.S. illegally three weeks earlier. ICE officials at that time interviewed him and released him from custody, concluding he had a reasonable fear of persecution if he returned to his home country, according to Barreca
There are NO persecutions to be feared in Ecuador!!!
But Biden let him in!
So phony!
I suppose after they later spent five minutes reviewing the claim, it was found to be unfounded and not a “reasonable fear.”
FYI-These are two guys. Iowa permits same-sex marriage since 2009. Just another magnet for illegal immigrants.
Sounds like a pretty good plan to me.
The AP says this like its a bad thing.

Too bad the AP isn't smart enough to figure this out.
Excellent. When they fail to report, you can deport...
Now they can get married in their own country surrounded by family and friends.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT-—THEY ARE 2 GAY MEN.
The AP also isn’t telling us what Felipe did that caused him to be detained.

I fail to see the problem.

I read another sob story about a German hiker who was detained at the airport and booted. She says she just wanted to hike some trail in Arizona, and had hiked the Pacific Crest Trail and the Appalachian Trail previously.
She was on a regular tourist visa, as in the previous cases, but it turns out, she was a blogger and made money off her posts about hiking in America. She had the wrong visa and got turned away and banned for five years.
