We had a power plant on the University of Missouri campus in the early 70s. I remember one year a transformer at the substation caught fire and shorted out the power. The arcing was visible for at least a mile. The whole nearby campus was bathed in an eerie electric blue light. It was the weirdest thing — and a bit scary since nobody know what was going on.

Experts on the scene were quick to rule out swamp gas as the cause.
