Fear and loathing grip L.A. hotels as Trump deportation threats loom

In late February, rumors that the federal government was planning a massive immigration enforcement sweep in Los Angeles County swirled.

And Travis Gemoets' phone was ringing off the hook. The attorney at Jeffer Mangels Butler & Mitchell, a firm that represents hundreds of hotels across Southern California, said he received about a dozen calls from nervous hotel general managers who reported an unusual number of workers failing to show up for work.

Hoteliers have been making contingency plans, consulting with lawyers, planning webinars and educating their managers on what to do in case immigration authorities knock on their doors.

In preparation for a predicted increase in audits of Form I-9s, the documents used to verify whether an employee is eligible to work in the U.S..

Some hotel workers are too fearful to show up for work, said Jacob Monty, an immigration and employment lawyer who advises chain restaurants.

"The hysteria is worse than what's happening on the ground, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have an effect," Monty said.

In late January, the labor union Unite Here Local 11 sent a letter backed by thousands of hotel workers urging hotel owners to provide additional protections for immigrant workers, asylum seekers and recipients of the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA.

Current union contracts include provisions prohibiting employers from using E-Verify, a long-standing computer-based federal program that makes it easy for employers to spot and reject unauthorized immigrants seeking jobs.

So, all L.A. hotels are occupied by illegal aliens exclusively?

Plenty of people on welfare in the area. Offer them a hotel job.
If they refuse then kick them off welfare.

I think the author is talking about hotel staff not showing up, not customers.

I believe what they have is a number of 80-year-old hotels filled with either homeless folks or migrants. If their ‘enterprise’ ends...there’s no further tourist trade (it would require renovation).

L.A. hotels are occupied by illegal aliens

Read the article. The hotels are not occupied by crimigrants, but are maintained by crimigrants. Illegals are the hotels' work force.

Note that union contracts prohibit employers from using E-Verify to weed out illegals. How does that hold up in a court of law?

Worry not-—there will be change but things will get better in time. Trust Trump he hasn’t steered us wrong yet.

So the managers of these hotels know they are hiring illegal aliens, they need to start receiving the hefty fines as stipulated by decades old federal law. next it will be the head of the service union whining about their members being targeted....but only because of the money the union will lose.

Was in Los Angeles last year (in West Hollywood) and I saw Americans working at the hotel I stayed at and the restaurants I ate in, FWIW.

Obviously, these hotels are KNOWINGLY hiring illegals.

if that is the case, are they paying these people in cash? Amd not declaring taxes?

Or, are they paying these people knowing they are use false identities?

I am guessing there is a LOT of fines or charges and jail time that should be coming their way.

Democrat politicos own the slums/section 8 housing where the illegals stay.

It’s one of the reasons they support the welfare/illegal pipeline.

How do you keep a Democrat from stealing your money?

Hide it under a pair of work boots.

“Was in Los Angeles last year (in West Hollywood) and I saw Americans working at the hotel I stayed at and the restaurants I ate in, FWIW.”

LOL. I doubt that West Hollywood is safe for illegals, particularly their kids, so it makes sense that the ‘locals’ would have to work there.

Nah, they are all just named “Juan Valdez” and have the same
sSN.

Under Obama and Bush II, it became illegal to question ID documents, to give Democrat modern-day slavers legal cover.
