‘They’re Totally Screwed’: White House Taunts Democrats on Shutdown
Politico ^ | 3/13/25 | Rachael Bade

Senate Democrats haven’t even surrendered yet on a government shutdown — but already White House officials are gloating about making them eat crow, almost taunting them to vote “no.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer threw down the gauntlet Wednesday, proclaiming that Republicans don’t have the 60 votes needed to keep the government open past Friday. But President Donald Trump and senior White House officials are increasingly confident Schumer will release enough centrists to put up the votes for passage, according to multiple White House officials I spoke to over the past 24 hours.

“They’re 100 percent gonna swallow it,” one White House official told me. “They’re totally screwed.”

The confidence is especially noteworthy given that Schumer has yet to detail his plans. Many lawmakers in both parties are privately predicting that some sort of deal will be reached in which Senate Democrats get amendment votes in return for allowing the House-passed “continuing resolution” to advance and ultimately pass.

Still, that’s not a done deal. And given the intense pressure from the base to flip Trump the bird, there’s still plenty of time for Democrats to back away from a possible deal before Friday’s deadline.

In some ways the administration looks like it’s almost itching for a shutdown and daring Democrats to touch the stove. Last month, Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought notably gave agencies until Thursday to submit plans for “large-scale reductions in force.” The details could spill out hours before a shutdown and would almost certainly agitate the Democratic base even further.

What’s more, Republicans felt confident enough to pass the so-called “CR” with a few provisions favorable to them. Those included increasing spending for defense and deportations, while making small cuts elsewhere and handcuffing Democrats’ ability to force votes on Trump’s controversial tariff policies.

It’s because the democrats can’t find the exit. They don’t know how to stop being radicals. They can’t figure out how to support the 80% issue without alienating their radical base. The alinski strategy they’ve been using for decades has been turned around to reflect the force back onto themselves, and they turn to it as a reflex. So they keep smashing themselves in the face with it.

It’s a really fun show if you’re looking for it.

It seems to me that 100% of the Democrats plan to oppose the CR with the hope that it fails to pass. And, if it fails to pass, the Democrats plan to blame the Republicans.

That’s not going to work. The MSM cannot save them. The Democrats will shoulder the blame. And perhaps the public will sit back and say “I’m glad there is a shutdown. All they do is waste money anyway.”

Is it Chuck Schumer or his autopen? Asking for a friend, just in case Chuck is going full Biden.

Ossoff GA
Peters MI
Shaheen NH is retiring, no pressure on her
warner VA
Smith MN
Lujan NM

There are not enough who might ask Schumer for a pass. The article is wrong.

Freepers and other Republicans claim Democrat Senators are out to lunch and totally lost at sea.

Maybe that's true for other Democrat Senators but the U.S. Senator from Minnesota -- Tina Smith -- recently tweeted this in response to a tweet by DOGE leader Musk ...

U.S. Senator Tina Smith (D-MN): "This is the ultimate dick boss move from Musk - except he isn’t even the boss, he’s just a dick."

See? U.S. Senator Tina Smith (D-MN) totally has her emotions in check. Although she clearly suffers from TDS, VDS (and now even) MDS.

GOP, hear this Loud and Clear - NO amendment votes allowed!

Make the Dems own this. STOP throwing them a lifeline. Reach across the aisle ONLY to slap them up side the head.

I also know the GOP will frack this up, so.....

“The Democrats will shoulder the blame.”

I’m 57 and I’ve yet to see the democrats shoulder the blame for a government shutdown.

“It seems to me that 100% of the Democrats plan to oppose the CR with the hope that it fails to pass. And, if it fails to pass, the Democrats plan to blame the Republicans.”

Democrats are going to use the media to blame Trump and Republicans for the shutdown. What I think the Democrats forgot was the legacy media is at its lowest approval ratings ever. Time for Trump to go on shows like Joe Rogan and other podcasts and talk about the benefits of the CR and budget.

Trump will have to shoulder the blame when beer drinkers, a core constuency, have no aluminum cans for buying their beer by the sixpach. Or paying a lot more.

And all this time I had thought Fetterman was the voice of reason within the Democrat party.

And perhaps he is, but with enough pressure in the right place, almost everybody succumbs to coercion.

They talk of politics as the ugly process of making sausage. That is way too nice of an analogy.

Dirty little secret...

Fedzilla NEVER shuts down.

Trump can deem whatever needs to stay open to serve the American public as essential, and it will continue to operate.

The rest can likely close with his blessing.

And to the American public’s delight.

Make our day, Chuck U.

It's going to be hard to blame the Republicans when all the democrats vote for a shutdown.
