If This Is the Reaction to the Senate Dems' First Move on the Spending Bill, They Better Rethink It
Townhall ^ | 03/12/2025 | Matt Vespa

We’re heading for a shutdown. On March 14, the government will close its doors, and it’s the fault of Senate Democrats who failed to advance the House’s six-month continuing resolution. They want to short-term CR this session to death and disrupt the GOP from their plans of passing a slew of crucial domestic items, like making the Trump tax cuts permanent, finishing the border wall, and securing our southern border. They also want to shut down the Department of Government Efficiency, whose work of uncovering wasteful spending and political class pork has hit close to home.

Usually, I hate CRs, but the big prize of passing that budget reconciliation package is too good. It’s not perfect, but it’s pretty damn close. Schumer, however, boasted about the GOP not having the votes for cloture this afternoon, as every Democrat refused to break ranks

On Wednesday afternoon, after Senate Democrats met to discuss a looming potential government shutdown for Friday if a bill is not passed in time, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) revealed that his party is prepared to shut down the government. On Tuesday night, the House voted mostly along party lines to pass a continuing resolution (CR), with all Republicans but one--Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky--unifying behind the bill. Democratic Rep. Jared Golden of Maine also voted for it.

Especially with one of their own, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) indicating he's opposed to the CR, Republicans needed that many more Democrats to cross the aisle in order to break the filibuster. Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) has reportedly indicated he'd vote in favor of the CR, and has also already posted to his X account that he would not shut down the government, but seven more Democrat votes would still be needed.

"Republicans do not have the votes to invoke cloture (on their CR)," Schumer revealed, pointing to how his caucus is supposedly "unified." The Democratic unity supposedly has to do with a one-month CR that Democrats have drafted, which is not what has passed the House. That bill, which passed, funds the government until September.

First, who the hell would take what the lunatics in the House Democratic Caucus have to say seriously.

Second, if the initial reaction to the Senate Democrats’ move, which is to push the government toward closure, is everyone calling Chuck ‘shutdown Schumer,’ maybe they should rethink this strategy. Democrats also overplayed their hand during the first Trump presidency when they shut down the government over illegal aliens.

Will there be a repeat here? Will voters be seeing right through their games? Maybe, since the Democratic Party’s approval rating is trash, with most voters viewing them as out of touch, unconcerned with their issues, and focusing on the wrong ones.

Make them do a real filibuster, hold the floor like Ted Cruz did that time, keep the Senate in session continuously, and bombard the public with messaging that it’s the Dems who are causing any inconvenience

Democrats never learn, I think this will end up blowing up in their face as much if not more than the Presidents address before congress.

Or Recess the Senate for week and ram thru a bunch of appointments. That would be fun. I thought they could do reconciliation and not need 60 votes?

“I thought they could do reconciliation and not need 60 votes?”

They are going to do a budget reconciliation later.

This is a CR to provide funding already approved in the present budget which expires is September.

I wish people stop interpreting Dhims low number as “people hate Democrats!”.... Technically, yes... but big chunk of it is from party members who want to see their party fights.
Schumer’s shutting down the government will be seen as them fighting Trump so I won’t be surprised if their poll number will increase.

It is the 2017s-2020s all over again!
Redux is the word...
As predicted, the GOP Senate will do anything to scuttle a Trump program...The globalist RINOs who voted for the CR anticipated the few scum who would stab Trump in the back...

There is always a handy Brutis around when a Senate needs one...

They can’t do reconciliation for this. Difficult more than once per year and they’re saving it for the budget

Schumer has a plan and it has potential for him.

He says he wants a clean CR, as it currently is, but limit it to April 15 — which provides time for a bipartisan CR out to October.

That’s a strong enough idea that it may keep 8 Dems from voting for the House CR.

I hope we've seen the last of Continuing Resolutions.

We need a real budget, one that identifies every expense to the penny given to every agency, with the intent and justification for the expense.

A CR is a continuation of the status quo --- a slush fund for grifters and political terrorists.

If you want to fund labs to create viruses or give LGBT comic books to Peruvians, author a bill and introduce it yourself, on the House Floor, by name. I want accountability for every dime of my money.

I don’t see how this can be blamed on RINO’s.

60 votes are required. We’ve got 52.

The Democrats are obstructing this because they have to. Their left-wing extremist base will go crazy if they acquiesce to everything the Trump wants.

If their base stays home they lose Senate seats that they thought they could win, and by when I mean hold.

Two things that the Senate Democrats fail to recognize are that (1) Trump is a reality TV star and (2) Trump has and knows how to use the Bully Pulpit.

If there is a shutdown, Trump needs to go to the American voters and urge them to call their Senators to pass the same Continuing resolution that the House passed. Then he needs to explain to the public why, what the Democrats are doing is not in the best interest of the County and why both branches of Congress need to take a step back and cooperate on future legislation. Legislation that does not include political pork, that does not include waste and that does not include fraud.
