A Bergen County police lieutenant is charged with stealing cocaine and fentanyl that was drug evidence used or set to be used in upcoming trials.
Lt. Kevin Matthew, 48, faces 50 criminal counts related to the alleged scheme. Prosecutors said he stole evidence from at least nine criminal cases and tried to sell the drugs for personal profit. Investigators said Matthew has more than $600,000 in unexplained cash deposits in his bank accounts.

Everything is wrong. The way they store such evidence is wrong. That he had access to it is wrong. That he was not questioned before nor followed up afterwards is wrong. He did wrong. And he’s such an idiot to deposit cash drug proceeds into his bank account.

Not really. A lot of unscrupulous people enter law enforcement exactly to gain access to things like this. Police departments everywhere have this problem at one time or another.
I worked for a small city police department (pop. 55,000) in Texas and a few of the cops there were complete scumbags. Our chief once got arrested for DWI. One of my field training officers was charged with DWI as well. The other officer who hired on with me was ultimately fired for official misconduct when he forced prostitutes to have sex with him on duty. Power oftentimes corrupts, and sometimes where you least expect it.
First of all, has the fool never watched any TV crime shows, the cop stealing drugs from the evidence locker never gets away with it. Secondly what’s with the article’s ‘tried to sell to sell the drugs for personal profit’?, the 600K in his bank account says he was pretty successful selling the drugs.
Did he previously work for the Sussex PD?

There was a dirty cop in the neighborhood. One day he was getting a haircut. Was waiting for my turn. After he left the old Italian barber said “See that guy? He is a thief with a badge.” Sadly there are many like him and it has caused decent , rational people to lose faith in law enforcement long before George Floyd, Comey, Mayorkas, FBI goon squads, lawfare and the BLM nonsense.
