Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, the senior Democratic senator from New Hampshire, has announced she will not run for reelection in 2026, creating an open-seat race in a battleground state former Vice President Kamala Harris narrowly carried in November.
Shaheen announced what she described as a “difficult” decision in an interview with The New York Times.
“It was a difficult decision, made more difficult by the current environment in the country — by President Trump and what he’s doing right now,” Shaheen, who is 78, told the Times.
Shaheen highlighted what she saw as Trump’s focus on dishing out retribution to his political opponents, looming cuts to the federal budget and Trump’s antagonistic stance toward Ukraine as personal concerns.
She is the third Senate Democrat to announce their retirement this year, setting up a tough election map for Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) next year.
Sens. Gary Peters (Mich.) and Tina Smith (Minn.) have also said they don’t plan to run for reelection in 2026.

Check her money load before she leaves. Maybe she realizes the free money train will soon be gone.
Good riddance to bad rubbish!
I could see Chris Sununu big-footing in for this.
He’d be a RINO, but at least better than a Dem—as they say in purple states.
Good. Another one who is anti-American bites the dust. She can blame it all on Trump (which I am perfectly fine with, by the way...this is why I voted for him) but the truth of the matter is, Democrats are consistently siding (as a wholly reflexive mechanism) with the sides of issues that only 20% of Americans support.
Any Democrat with two neurons to rub together can see where that type of moonbattery is going to take them.
The ones who don’t have two neurons to rub together are in it for the corrupt monetary gains.
She probably got all hers already.
Jeanne Shaheen’s estimated net worth is between $1.69 million and $8.45 million as of 2023, with a previous estimate of $3,823,005 in 2018. Much of her wealth is attributed to her husband’s business ventures and properties.
Insider trading information with her husband and all that.
I would rather have a democratic puke than stab-you-in-the-back Sununu.
He is popular in NH
Her graft ran out.
RINO like Sununu is very dangerous when there are only 50 or 51 Republicans. The more Republicans, like 55, the less influence he has.
Good riddance, you nasty old bat.
Guess her USAID money ran out see this is what happens when our tax dollars dont get given to commies anymore they retire
The single boldest step the Dems could take to begin digging out of their massive hole would be for every Senator or House Member who would turn 78 before the end of their next term to announce TODAY that they will not stand for re-election.
This generation of Dems is responsible for most or all of the Party’s comprehensive corruption and dysfunction, with the oldsters fully embedded in safe seats. They can hold these seats for as long as they live but by one means or another need to be swept out before the Party can rise from rock bottom.
I have not done a complete count, but such a move would retire a gobsmacking number of Dems!
She knew she was going to lose, so abandons the Democrat ship as a winner.
Her husband is partners in one of the top law firms in NH.

I would think their beach house in York Beach, ME is worth $3M+ all by itself. Not to mention she must have a house in the Concord, NH area and probably one in the DC area.
Another rat seeing her funding cut off is leaving the sinking ship, imagine there will be more
Right...I noticed the WIDE variation in estimates of their wealth!
One of the guys I work with lives two minutes away from her house in York Beach, ME. He walks by it all the time. It is not ocean front. But it is a lot closer to the water than his. Plus he said it is a four family(apartment)house. Probably worth $3.5 million or more.
