HOUSTON - More than half of Texas Republicans say they would at least consider voting for Attorney General Ken Paxton if he ran in the Republican US Senate primary.

Paxton is considering a challenge to sitting Senator John Cornyn.

According to a new poll from the University of Houston's Hobby School of Public Affairs, around 68% of Republicans who either voted in the 2022 or 2024, or are likely to vote in the 2026 Republican primary said they would consider a vote for the attorney general.

The poll does not ask who they would vote for in a match-up.

BUT

Both candidates are by far viewed and liked most favorably and it’s almost tied in that respect.

This is good news for Paxton...

I like the idea of Senator Ken Paxton. I like the idea of U.S. Attorney General Ken Paxton better.

How does Cornyn get so much support? He is an obvious RINO and screams untrustworthy. I don’t get Texas and their “Republicans”

Anyone know if Dems can meaningfully influence GOP primaries in Texas?

Hugely important that the rest of the Senate gets the message from the base. Cornyn should go if only for that reason alone, but he has supplied reasons aplenty. The degree of support for him among Texas Republicans as compared to Paxton mystifies me.

It’s incumbency. Kay Baily found out. Does Cornyn’s actions suggest the voters will fire him? I don’t think so. You gotta be a Liz Cheney for that to work.

Every reelection year Cornyn comes out as MR. CONSERVATIVE, and once elected he takes off his mask and goes back to being Mr. RINOcrat.

“It’s not who votes that counts; it’s who counts the votes.” - Stalin

We frequently talk about democrat voter fraud. Should we expect republican primary voter fraud in Texas? IOW - will Cornyn's people responsible for counting/managing votes cheat for him?

Kevin McCarthy wasn’t primaried even though they knew he’d be a lousy speaker. No challenger to make a statement. Republicans don’t work that way. A challenge by Paxton will look like something personal.

The problem is that the democrats will cross over to vote for Cornyn.

I can’t be the only one who despises RINOs more than dems. Demorats are like bears chitting in the woods, that’s what they do. OTOH the GOPe has a choice and often they go uniparty continuing to ruin our country. Cornyn is repulsive.

There are too many brain-dead, unengaged Texans who want to preserve the status quo of RINO-ism. I’m so ashamed of them.

I’m afraid that Cornyn is in this seat until he decides to step down.

Texan here. Cornyn has refined the art of appearing conservative while voting back-door leftist. Even the candidate report card groups rate Cornyn high on the "conservative scale," giving him a "B" at worst, but mostly an "A-".

You can’t really say it is Texas, if all the other “red” states were firing their rinos, the few from Texas wouldn’t be an issue. But it is frustrating that the electorate is so uninvolved. A year ago they were cancelling gun shows in Texas as a result of Cornyn’s legislation. He hasn’t done a single conservative thing except vote with the majority, and yet Texans seem to be posed send him back to the Senate.

Which is why every state needs a DOGE audit of voter rolls. True the Vote is working on getting their help.
