U.S. Agrees to Resume Military Assistance to Ukraine
The New York Times ^ | March 11, 2025 Updated 2:31 p.m. ET | Andrew E. Kramer and Alan Rappeport

The United States agreed on Tuesday to immediately lift the pause on intelligence sharing and resume military assistance to Ukraine after more than eight hours of meetings in Saudi Arabia where Kyiv said it would support the Trump administration’s proposal for a 30-day cease-fire with Russia.

The talks in the coastal city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, brought fresh momentum to cease-fire negotiations that faltered following a public confrontation at the White House between the Ukrainian and U.S. presidents. The Trump administration had paused all military assistance and intelligence sharing in the aftermath of the meeting.

The announcement came hours after Russian officials said Ukrainian drones targeted Moscow in the largest bombardment of the war. There was no immediate comment from Russia, which did not have officials at the talks.

In a joint statement, the United States and Ukraine acknowledged that the terms of any cease-fire would be subject to Russia’s approval. They also agreed to conclude “as soon as possible” a deal to develop Ukraine’s critical mineral resources — an agreement that was put on hold after the Oval Office dust-up. That joint venture is intended to “expand Ukraine’s economy and guarantee Ukraine’s long-term prosperity and security,” the statement said.

It added that the U.S. and Ukraine also discussed humanitarian relief efforts that would take place during a cease-fire and the exchange of prisoners of war.

“Representatives of both nations praised the bravery of the Ukrainian people in defense of their nation and agreed that now is the time to begin a process toward lasting peace,” the U.S. and Ukraine said in the statement.

The U.S. delegation in Jeddah was led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Michael Waltz, the national security adviser. They met with a...

It is refreshing to have adults in charge of foreign policy again. The sooner this war is ended, the better for the United States.

Russians can talk and lob artillery shells at the same time.

Russia is not going to give Pete Hegseth time to rearm Ukraine.

“US agrees to resume proxy war with Russia”

That is correct.

mucusmaxillary would deny that there would be no war without the $350 billion the Deep State laundered through Ukraine.

That's what I thought about the proposed "ceasefire" from the beginning.

To paraphrase Eli Wallach, "When you are at war, make war, don't talk."

The deep State and the current US- as in US agrees to…- as in the Trump government are two different entities

Anyone who thinks Trump and his liaisons are interested in continuing an money laundering operation are simply mistaken

Doubtful this isn’t still tightly controlled after the ukronazis sent predawn attack drones seeded with ball bearings into residential housing in Moscow

Z kinda punked the jeddah negotiations just as they kicked off

After the drone attack, If there is any benefit to Putin, today, to give the ukes 30 days to rest up and rearm after they finally retreated after being routed in Kursk…… make it make sense

Full credit to Trump for resuming military assistance to Ukraine.

This comes, apparently, because Ukraine agreed to share its mineral wealth with the United States. The parties also committed to support a 30 day cease-fire resolution that would require the approval of Russia, a proposal that is apparently the unilateral work of the Trump administration, the terms of which are unknown, at least unknown this side of the New York Times pay wall.

Whether Russia agrees to the cease-fire will tell us much about the extent to which Trump and Putin have concluded a deal between themselves alone concerning the fate of Ukraine, if at all. It might tell us why the Trump administration required the commitment to exploit Ukraine's minerals as a condition precedent to submitting its cease-fire proposal to Russia and, evidently, as the price of restoring military assistance.

If Russia declines a cease-fire, can we reasonably conclude that Ukraine traded mineral rights as the cost of continuing military assistance from the United States? Can we say that the United States suspended military assistance to Ukraine to get mineral rights?

If Russia accepts a cease-fire agreement as is, can we conclude that an agreement had been worked out in advance between Trump and Putin that was not disclosed to Ukraine?

If Russia conditions acceptance of the cease-fire on additional demands, can we conclude that no previous agreement existed between Trump and Putin and the dustup in the Oval Office was what it appeared to be, a failure of communication or inept diplomacy?

What motives caused the parties to act as they did in this affair? What will the European people believe? What will the American people believe? Will American alliances around the world be affected? Does it matter?

It’s all theater. Trump and Zelensky both know Putin will say no.

Zelensky, having refused to negotiate, will get what he wants : keep the money and goodies rolling in and keep the war going. (He apparently doesn’t pay attention to that old adage “be careful what you wish for”.)

Trump gets to say he tried. By resuming aid and intelligence, he avoids accusations of “abandoning” Ukraine or being blamed for their continuing losses on the battlefield. And he looks like he extracted a price from Zelensky. The CNBC crowd and propagandized Euros will blame it all on Russia.

Ukraine will continue to lose despite the aid and intelligence, just as they have been. The Russians will keep right on attritting Ukrainian forces and destroying whatever fancy war toys we have left to give them. It’s sad, but it is what it is.

Russia hasn't managed to win after 3 years.

The Ukrainians are being pushed back in Kursk, but retaking Toretsk and nibbling significant chunks away from the Pokrovsk area.

They're also getting significantly more weaponry from Europe, especially France and Scandinavia.

The Europeans see keeping the Russians tied down in Ukraine as useful cover while they rearm.

Of course, we've all heard about Russia's inevitable victory for three years.

Another year in and mighty Russia will have been battling Ukraine for longer than they fought the Germans.
