Some reports indicate that Alawite forces associated with the Assad regime attacked first, and the current massacres are the result.

Supposedly the Iranians fomented at least some Alawites to fight.

Christians, like Jews in the Middle Ages, have relied on allying with local rulers for defense from the majority. In one pogrom in Cologne, the local German nobility came in armed to protect the Jews.

Current Christian-Muslim tensions go back to the decaying Ottoman Empire, when French commercial and imperial interests coming into Syria from Lebanon to Damascus benefitted the Christian population disproportionately.
