Violent and sudden. What a firing squad execution looked like through my eyes
AP ^ | March 7, 2025 | JEFFREY COLLINS

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — I've now watched through glass and bars as 11 men were put to death at a South Carolina prison. None of the previous 10 prepared me for watching the firing squad death of Brad Sigmon on Friday night.

I might now be unique among U.S. reporters: I've witnessed three different methods — nine lethal injections and an electric chair execution. I can still hear the thunk of the breaker falling 21 years later......

I also pored over the transcript of his trial, including how prosecutors said it took less than two minutes for Sigmon to strike his ex-girlfriend's parents nine times each in the head with a baseball bat, going back and forth between them in different rooms of their Greenville County home in 2001 until they were dead......

The firing squad is certainly faster — and more violent — than lethal injection. It's a lot more tense, too. My heart started pounding a little after Sigmon's lawyer read his final statement. The hood was put over Sigmon's head, and an employee opened the black pull shade that shielded where the three prison system volunteer shooters were.

About two minutes later, they fired. There was no warning or countdown. The abrupt crack of the rifles startled me. And the white target with the red bullseye that had been on his chest, standing out against his black prison jumpsuit, disappeared instantly as Sigmon's whole body flinched......

After a 13-year pause while South Carolina struggled to obtain the drugs for lethal injections, the state has resumed executions. Inmates may choose between injections, electrocution or the firing squad.

Reporter didn’t give his reaction to it. Prob didn’t want to reveal them. I wonder why.

Sitting in a cell for all your life is no picnic I imagine but actually going to your death on death row must be a difficult thing to go through. Not that I’m thinking they don’t deserve it. It’s easier and quicker than the murdered experienced at these peoples hands.

When I was a kid NY had the electric chair and the executions were announced on the nightly news when they happened.

I was young, maybe 9 or so when one night I walked in on the news and some newsman announcing so and so died in the electric chair, steam coming from his ears. Never forgot that.

A new hobby for Jeffrey, outrage excursions.

I note that they tried painless nitrogen on someone, recently. I guess his lawyer told him to fake great pain and suffering, so who can tell.

The advantage of a firing squad is that it is no worse than what tens of thousands of young Americans have already received in war.

If fentanyl is is as deadly as they say, and I have no reason to disbelieve, why aren’t we just using the drug we confiscate to send the convicted peacefully to their forever fate?

I have thought that carbon monoxide or nitros-oxide would be good for executions.

Both are rapid and painless in sufficient concentrations.

From the article, emphasis mine:

In the two weeks since I knew how Sigmon was going to die, I read up on firing squads and the damage that can be done by the bullets. I looked at the autopsy photos of the last man shot to death by the state, in Utah in 2010.

It was a SC democrat state senator that pushed for allowing firing squads because it’s over fast

It’s quick and it’s over and done with

I have to admit, busy pussy is good pussy.

In the south, we have an aphorism: “I’m busier than a three-legged cat trying to bury a turd on an ice pond.”

I am thinking that SILENT is the key. An execution is the last chance to grand-stand and play it up. Liberal defense lawyers seem to want to see this and the executed oblige.

I would like to see some wacko hamming it up inside of a tank in front of witnesses, long before anything happens, and then quietly and peacefully shuffling off his mortal coil.

We keep trying to make this more painless and expensive. It’s more than Americans in the military get.
