Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) signaled Thursday that President Trump’s threat to levy tariffs on key trading partners of the U.S. is hurting his constituents, saying “when we start losing, you back off.”
“Almost every industry in Kentucky has come to me and said, ‘It will hurt our industry and push up prices of homes, cars,’ and so, I’m going to continue to argue against tariffs,” Paul said late Thursday in an interview with CNN.
The Kentucky Republican argued the U.S. has “more leverage” than any other nation, but not “all the leverage.” He urged the Trump administration to be “smart” about levying additional taxes and reciprocal tariffs.
“When we start losing, you back off. There’s such a thing as strategic retreat,” he said, according to a clip highlighted by Mediaite.

Most of the angst is what ifs. Let it play out.
We are losing on the messaging. Same with DOGE.
Rand needs to shut up.
shut uo, idiot.
Curious what part of Reciprocal Tariffs the Senator finds so difficult to understand?
How about Senator you represent all your constituents, not just your business owners?
Lol that right. Cling to your TDS ignore all polling data that indicates your feelings about DOGE are total nonsense.
I have not seen a good summary of tariffs from both sides. Do you have one?
A very dynamic situation. People want easy answers.
As a supporter of Rand Paul, my question to him and others regarding tariffs, “How come it is okay for other countries to screw the U.S. with tariffs and not have this go both ways?
As a American, I am tired of supporting the rest of the world, why the rest of the world continues to screw Americans.
NO MORE.
Rand will never shut up. He speaks his mind, as he should
No we are not.
The DemocRat Media is dying, including “their messaging”.
Rand doesn’t understand how tariffs work or what Trump is trying to do here. All he is doing is muddying the waters. You don’t back off, you educate your constituents about the dangers of going down the same road as before.
There will be dislocations in the economic system, and some could last several years. These “Protective” tariffs are designed to raise the price of imports to a point where our products are competitive with cheap imports. As US manufacturers ramp up production induced by the higher prices, the pressure on prices will fall. This will also create new jobs as these industries expand as will economic growth.
For now, the mantra should be: Stay the course! Give the new and better system a chance to take hold and grow.

Screw the constituents there Mr.libertarian hero. Be a champion of industry! heh.
Bringing jobs back into the US is going to hurt before it helps. It’s like treating a disease instead of treating the symptoms.
Prices are going to go up on products, but a lot more good jobs are going to be created, and when the domestic product increase, our standard of living stops getting reduced. At some point, wages will increase faster than consumer prices, but not at first.
Of course he won’t shut up, but he needs to this time, not to mention other times.
He’s often right, but he’s often wrong and this time he’s not only wrong but is undermining Trump making the right moves on trade.
I voted for a fighter.
I voted Trump.
I got what I voted for.
Rand don’t be the typical GOPe weenie senator.
Let the man fight.
Trump is a CHAMPION fighter.
Champion fighters often have to go the distance into those last two rounds which are called the championship rounds.
Don’t be the disappointment that you and your daddy have been to so many who have wanted to be able to get fully behind you but to whom you have always eventually crapped out on.
Very republican in his thought processes.
Tariffs are a bitter remedy to swallow. I’m not sure there is a positive way to sell the public on them. There will be collateral damage every time. It would help if the positives can be pointed out and repeated to the public. Right now, the short term effects are being noted.
DOGEs would be easier to present how the public will benefit from removing the excess spending in government.
Most everyone understands that part.
We are losing on the messaging. Same with DOGE.”
Less so with DOGE. The rats still have full control of MSM. The benefits of Tariffs will take time and are difficult to explain in a sound bite. People understand spending billions on trans animals is preposterous. They know DOGE found that.
