President Donald Trump on Wednesday said his administration aims to cut around 65% of staff at the Environmental Protection Agency, a key regulatory body that works on a range of areas, including climate change.
"I spoke with Lee Zeldin and he thinks he's going to be cutting 65 or so percent of the people from environmental," he said, referring to the EPA administrator.
The agency currently employs more than 17,000 of the roughly two million total U.S. federal workforce.
Trump has made slashing the size of the federal government a key priority in his first days in office, tasking Elon Musk, the world's richest person, with aiding that effort as well as cutting government spending.
The Republican ran on a platform that promised to curb environmental protection regulations, specifically those related to climate change, in order to increase economic growth.
He has called climate change a "scam," and pulled Washington out of the landmark Paris Agreement for a second time on his first day back in office.
Since then, he has declared a "national energy emergency" to expand domestic oil drilling, and signed executive orders to slow the transition to electric vehicles and halt offshore wind farm projects.
Zeldin, a former U.S. congressman from New York, has committed to delivering Trump's campaign promises, although he acknowledged last month that man-made climate change was "real."
He has said he would prioritize the EPA's role in ensuring clean water and air, but appears set to roll back a host of other environmental regulations.
"The EPA is going to aggressively pursue an agenda powering the Great American Comeback... that's our purpose," he said earlier this month.
The new EPA administrator has appeared to embrace Musk's government spending cut efforts, announcing Tuesday that the agency had slashed $60 million in grants that were funding "wasteful DEI and environmental justice programs," referring to diversity, equity

Good start. Why would we need the Feds doing this?
Cut the CAFE standards, PLEASE!!!!
Can we have diesel pickups back like other countries? In the $20,000 range without the EPA nonsense?
Focus on the real mission: clean up toxics without killing industries.
Get rid of Noxious Nixon’s creation.
Some years ago I got pulled into volunteering to help with a local project that was receiving “help” from the USEPA because of some environmental contamination that had been mitigated at the site. The first words the woman said included the phrase “Environmental Justice Community”. When I asked what that meant, I knew it was going to be a disaster...and it was.
Everything is racial to them. Every. Thing. And yes, she was a POS...I mean POC.
TELLING ME THAT THE RAIN WATER/SNOW MELT ON MY HOUSE ROOF CANNOT BE USED FOR GARDEN WATER IS JUST PLAIN NUTS.

TELLING ME THAT THE RAIN WATER/SNOW MELT ON MY HOUSE ROOF CANNOT BE USED FOR GARDEN WATER IS JUST PLAIN NUTS.

That is not acceptable.
What is the reason they give?
A good start? The procession of corrupt politicians before Trump would have never ever considered the cuts Trump is doing. Bush didn’t, Reagan didn’t...Zip nothing!
Thank God for Trump!
Very good news, something we have hoped for since 2016
At one point, the EPA had more lawyers than the DOJ.
I don’t need back-up cameras (I love them but don’t need them), Roll up windows (less electronics), Lift and lower my tailgate on my own (next year the hood will electronically raise), manual transmission is okay (anti-theft device), air condition is optional (depends on your locale), make it where any diesel mechanic can work on it.
There is a lot of bloat in federal agencies.
-10K, It’s a start.
End all “wetlands” prosecutions as well, pay the legal fees of those homeowners crucified by them, and start selling of millions of acres of Federal land for grazing, mining and drilling.
Yep President Trump has political courage like we have not seen in 40 years
However I would like to see the EPA vanish into the dust pile of History. I know wishful thinking but one can dream
