Murdered Idaho coed had DNA of 3 people under her fingernails — here’s why Bryan Kohberger’s lawyers want it tossed

One of the coeds butchered at the University of Idaho in 2022 had DNA from three different people under her fingernails, according to bombshell newly unsealed court documents.

However, lawyers for murder suspect Bryan Kohberger say a test to match the traces to their client came back with inconclusive results.

As a result, the evidence should be excluded from his trial, they argued in a court filing that was made public on Tuesday

The samples taken from the fingernails of 23-year-old Madison Mogen offer yet another twist in the case of the four students who were horrifically stabbed to death in their off-campus house in Moscow, Idaho.

It’s unclear how the DNA evidence got there, or who it belongs to. However, in cases where a victim fights back and scratches an attacker, skin samples are sometimes left under the fingernails.

Attorneys for Kohberger filed a flurry of motions last month to exclude a huge swath of evidence from the August quadruple murder trial.

The Washington State University criminology Ph.D. student is charged with murdering Mogen, along with her housemates Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin.

DNA evidence on a knife sheath left at the scene helped lead investigators to Kohberger, but now defense attorney Bicka Barlow is arguing against the methodology used in tests performed on evidence at the scene.

Hopefully they can get him on the other evidence, because that seems reasonable doubt. Unfortunately, she can’t testify how she go those other DNA samples.

Hmmm? Is it possible that he is innocent?

Bicka Barlow is arguing against the methodology used in tests performed on evidence at the scene

what testing error would magically make the DNA tested match Kohbergers?

Yes.

Not probable but certainly possible.

This entire case is weird.

The doubt is that he killed her. She might have gotten the DNA sample by having had sex with him, just like she probably had sex with the men who were the other two DNA samples.

I don’t see this getting tossed.

Defense can bring up DNA of 3 other people were found, that doesn’t invalidate that his clients was also found there.

Honestly be surprised you don’t find multiple persons DNA under the fingernails of anyone you test.

I know defense attorneys have to do anything and everything in defending their client, but this filing just, I would think, be laughable on its face.

Defense can argue DNA of 3 others were found as well, but that doesn’t invalidate the evidence that their clients was also found there, or prejudice the case in any way.

Obviously the first thing you do is see if there are any database matches. If not...you go to places like ancestry.com and try to find relatives who partially match and then take it from there. IIRC that’s how they got the Golden State Killer decades later.

And the Defense can make that argument in court, however trying to toss the evidence is just comical to me.

I can’t see the judge tossing it, since it’s there.

That’s why I never submitted a DNA sample.
But my sister, bless her heart, did. :)

Possibly, but fact multiple persons DNA were found under her fingernails, certainly isn’t proof of that.

Honestly, I don’t see how this is a BOMBSHELL.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you randomly sampled 100 people, you would find many having multiple persons DNA under their fingernails.

Except that it apparently wasn't.

Exactly.

Unless he’s trying to claim the test was botched and has some evidence to back that claim up, this is just throwing spaghetti at a wall and praying for a win IMHO
