Ending years of sometimes contentious deliberations, the Galveston Wharves Board of Trustees agreed Tuesday afternoon to berth the Battleship Texas at Pier 15, securing a long-term home for the historic warship and adding an important new element to its growing suite of attractions.

"The Battleship Texas Foundation is pleased to have unanimous support and endorsement of the Wharves Board for locating the USS Texas at Pier 15—just a short walk from Pier 21 and the historic Galveston Strand," foundation CEO Tony Gregory said. "The Battleship is a wonderful asset for Galveston, and we look forward to creating a magnificent experience for all Texans to enjoy."
...
"In one of our meetings, Richard [trustee Moore] asked me if the Coast Guard was happy and I said, 'The Coast Guard is never happy,'" Brown told the board. "I would say, the sooner we can get the battleship to the safety of Pier 15, the happier the Coast Guard will be."

A ping out to the Texas Ping list, founded by Windflier.

The Battleship Texas could soon be neighbors with the Carnival Breeze and a number of other cruise ships at the Port of Galveston.
Another special Texas summer edition for your perusal.
As always, please FReepmail me if you want on or off the Texas Ping list.
Blessings, and stay cool!
Porta-potty on the port bow, porta-potty on the port bow!!!
I kind of liked it where it was.
They should fix it up like it was in WW1 complete with bi-planes. It was an actuall aircraft carrier then.
I am glad it is still around. It’s a cool ship.
Steel ships take a lot of maintenance just to remain afloat.
Not as much as wooden ships; still, they are costly to keep afloat.
That would have been nice but probably hard to do, with the design so old.
And if we even have the techniques that they used back then to quickly weld these ships together.
I worked on a transport ship a bit larger than that in New Orleans one summer. It had carried tanks to the Iraq war. One morning I went to work and they had the thing on blocks on the bank of the river. Have no clue how they did that.
I also would have liked to see it stay at San Jacinto monument, but at least it lives and can be toured.
Shouldn’t that be on the poop deck??
Thanks
Battleship Texas was on the front line of innovations in gunnery, aviation, and radar throughout her career. A veteran of both World Wars, today she is the world’s last surviving Dreadnought.
She looks alot like the Arizona with one less gun per turret.
That’s funny.
Beautiful old battle wagon.
Instead of sending USAID taxpayer money overseas to fund useless garbage, it should be redirected to fund OUR monuments, heritage, traditions, and culture.
American money used for AMERICANS
The tripod mast was so eerily reminiscent of the battleships berthed at Pearl Harbor on Dec 7th.
She is truly a historical gem. I don't understand why there was such a debate on where to permanently berth her.
The last dreadnaught.
It just spent the last couple years in dry dock getting millions in safe keeping done so it doesn’t sink. They had to raise the money themselves. I think the state of Texas finally did kick in some money to help.
Japan has a pre-dreadnaught still.

They should get her back in operating order and take her out to the Gulf of America on April 21 or July 4 and fire her guns.
