Ask the Germans what happened to their US properties in both World Wars.

My wife's grandfather came to the United States and joined the army and served during the Spanish American war and Beyond. After he left the Army he married an American woman and became a schoolteacher. The family moved to a small town in Oregon.

In the run-up to WWI anti-German sentiment was fueled by propaganda that was encouraged by the Wilson administration. Her grandfather was fired from his job. The kids were beaten up at school and had rocks thrown at them. The family's house was burned down in the middle of the winter and they were run out of town. My wife's mother was born in 2014; there were six children in total. All of them nearly died from starvation and exposure.

Her grandfather hadn't allowed German to be spoken in the house even before this bad experience. They moved North to Washington when they were able where relatives were able to give them support. When WWI ended her grandfather was able to get a teaching job again. He advanced to principal in a larger school district and eventually became the Superintendent of one of the largest school districts in the state.

No one in the family let the bad experience before and during WWI spoil their lives or their love for the United States.

I thought of the Ukraine war as a distraction, if not an attempt to trap the US into another stupid war, when we should be focusing on China and our real interests in the Pacific.
