Defense Department changes Fort Moore's name back to Fort Benning
CBS ^ | 3/3/25 | Eleanor Watson

The Pentagon announced Monday that Fort Moore, formerly named Fort Benning for a Confederate general, will again be named Fort Benning, although it will now honor a different Benning.

Defense Secretary Hegseth in a statement said the base will now honor Cpl. Fred G. Benning, who was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his extraordinary heroism in action during World War I, when he served in the U.S. Army in France in 1918. Benning died in 1974. The base was originally named for Lt. Gen. Henry Benning, a Confederate general and Southern secessionist who opposed freeing slaves.

“If some people are too stupid to see that, it is their problem.”
Unfortunately Lincoln did not kill off the Democrats and we are still stuck with them.
I could care less what a American military installation is named for.
My bases Keesler, Minot, Anderson, McClellan.

I just want the base to be effective.

Naming Southern bases after Confederates helped people remember where they were.

Cheap stupid trick. Just go back to old names and skip the virtue signalling.

The military bases in the Southern states were named after Confederate heroes based on the post-Reconstruction reconcilement of the former Confederacy with the nation as a whole. It was a just compromise, and the sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons of the former Rebel soldier fought for the United States from the Spanish-American War through the Iraq and Afghan Wars. Imagine those conflicts without men like Alvin York, Audie Murphy, Carlos Hancock, and Chris Kyle. Other than possibly Alvin York, who came from a Unionist county in East Tennessee, the other men were likely descended from Confederate soldiers.

If Geo. Washington had been born in the 1820s then surely he would have been a Confederate General.

I believe that Washington's nephews or grandnephews did fight for the Confederacy. Also, Robert E. Lee Lee married the granddaughter of John Parke Custis, who was Washington's stepson.

I thank you for your service.

My father was USAF and I remember the statues at the different bases. I just see no reason to tear down statues of General Benning.

I see something stirring in America’s response to the Civil War, honoring both North and South, alike - this, while ending human slavery.

You are right that, in the end, the names may not matter, but the Left sure seems to think they do.

YES!

While I admire Hal Moore I was born at Ft. Benning.

That’s what I’ll always call it.

Based on the condition of the cities around that fort, they can just call it “tha hood”, and it would be appropriate. Had a family member who chose to serve a 2nd term in Iraq in combat rather than be shipped back to the states and be stationed at tha hood.
