The Pentagon announced Monday that Fort Moore, formerly named Fort Benning for a Confederate general, will again be named Fort Benning, although it will now honor a different Benning.
Defense Secretary Hegseth in a statement said the base will now honor Cpl. Fred G. Benning, who was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his extraordinary heroism in action during World War I, when he served in the U.S. Army in France in 1918. Benning died in 1974. The base was originally named for Lt. Gen. Henry Benning, a Confederate general and Southern secessionist who opposed freeing slaves.

Awesome!
More! More! More!
Excellent. Denying our history is no way to face the future.
I like it. Find somebody with the same name folks “today” will like and change it back. Works!
Airborne!
There’s gotta be someone named Hood that served at Ft Hood or whatever they changed it to. When I was there a few months ago, the people still called it Fort Hood and have no plans to change.
I think that’s what King County in Washington did. The old King was politically incorrect, so they named after MLK, who to my knowledge, had absolutely nothing to do with King County Washington.
Pretty smart. They should have left it alone in the first place. Mel Gibson made a very good movie about the Moores. “We Were Soldiers”.
You lose the war while holding an unpopular opinion, and then we erase you from history as if you never existed.
That way no one will ever be able to hold your BadThought again, ad we’ll all be safer. Winston Smith will confirm this.
Well it’s the original guy that it was named after. That’s stated in the first sentence.
If it works for folks, then great.
Always was Benning to me.
Next thing you know, they will change Ft Johnson back to Ft Polk...then find some no name Private from post Vietnam 1970s with an Army Achievement Medal and two Article 15s, and they’ll name the fort after him and NOT the confederate General.
And I will laugh my ass off.
Wow! And this isn’t denying our history? Now, it’s Corporal Benning?
Stupid. Put the name back to honor the same Southern General.
Our history is of honoring the South, despite a Civil War. We are One Nation, under God.
If some people are too stupid to see that, it is their problem.
I served my last year at Benning. Please leave things alone.
It was always Fort Benning to me. Earned my wings there in November 1976.
I was at Benning in 1971. Loved it.
Yep. Hal Moore was a hell of a solider but Benning will always be Benning to old soldiers.
(made a very good movie about the Moores)
Sorry the card says “Moops”
Oh, Moors...
Never mind
The Democrats will change it back whenever one of them wins the WH. This will be an ongoing ping-pong thing every time the WH switches parties going forward, I guess.
