For the most part, Trump is trying to force other countries to remove the tariffs on our exports. If he succeeds, he'll help the economy but - increased tariffs are a tax increase paid by consumers. If we increase consumer taxes, we'll get reduced economic activity. He needs a phased approach imo. Especially since there are signs that the economy is already slowing.
