Amazon founder and owner of The Washington Post Jeff Bezos announced a new direction for the paper Wednesday morning as a reckoning among the media in a new Trump era continues.
"I’m writing to let you know about a change coming to our opinion pages. We are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets. We’ll cover other topics too of course, but viewpoints opposing those pillars will be left to be published by others," Bezos wrote in a letter to Washington Post employees and posted on X. "There was a time when a newspaper, especially one that was a local monopoly, might have seen it as a service to bring to the reader’s doorstep every morning a broad-based opinion section that sought to cover all views. Today, the internet does that job."
"I am of America and for America, and proud to be so. Our country did not get here by being typical. And a big part of America’s success has been freedom in the economic realm and everywhere else. Freedom is ethical — it minimizes coercion — and practical — it drives creativity, invention, and prosperity," he continued. "I’m confident that free markets and personal liberties are right for America. I also believe these viewpoints are underserved in the current market of ideas and news opinion. I’m excited for us together to fill that void."
Resignations and outage over the move are already underway.
"I offered David Shipley, whom I greatly admire, the opportunity to lead this new chapter. I suggested to him that if the answer wasn’t 'hell yes,' then it had to be 'no.' After careful consideration, David decided to step away. This is a significant shift, it won’t be easy, and it will require 100% commitment — I respect his decision. We’ll be searching for a new Opinion Editor to own this new direction," Bezos continued.
Massive encroachment by Jeff Bezos into The Washington Post’s opinion section today - makes clear dissenting views will not be published or tolerated there
I still have not felt encroachment on my journalism on the news side of coverage, but if Bezos tries interfering with the news side I will be quitting immediately and letting you know.

I do not care what they print on their opinion page. My problem with the Washington Post is printing opinion on the front page and calling it news.
These “liberals” no longer believe in personal liberties. Especially not “dangerous” freedom of speech. Except when its their speech — that’s okay.
Wow. Finally no more kowtowing to the communists and activist racial studies graduates. The reeducation process begins.
How abt just telling us the news and NOT anti-Trump propaganda
There are a lot pundits who will be looking for barista jobs. They can't "learn to code" because AI is taking over those jobs.
"Latte, half-caff soy milk double mocca with whip, please"
The newspapers were a wonderful invention — for the 19th century — but we no longer live in the age when the editor/publisher was the only educated person in town. Now they can’t keep up — and there is limited use for the one thing they know, and keep repeating every day for the rest of their lives.
It’s time to DOGE the POST — and make way for all the information and knowledge being created every day — but not reported because it is not in their skillset, and want to limit all future discussions to the one thing they know That’s not good enough for the future.
We want to be the first to know — and not the last to know, because they are defending the status quo — of themselves exclusively in charge and acting as gatekeepers against the freedom of thought. That world has passed.
When the MSM and academia die, liberals will be left with posters at Planned Parenthood to get their message out.
Jeff Stein can go pound sand.
Now I feel a bit like Bezos is kissing *my* ring... and that of many normies who will subscribe to the Washingtoon Post
Can you ever trust the opinion of someone who changes it based upon the political climate and their own economic bottom line?
I must say that when I had my first cup of coffee this morning at about 7 am EST, I did not think about these comments by Jeff.
We may see more balanced (less knee-jerk anti Trumpism) reporting in the paper. I certainly hope so.
Let the wailing and gnashing of teeth begin by reporters and the left-wing political establishment begin!
The worlds richest men are all coming around to free markets and personal liberty….who would have thought??😎
Indeed! I’m watching Bezos, the Zuck and others with some level of skeptical fascination. If they wanted, they could just ride out Trumps four years as quietly as possible, to avoid his wrath. Instead they do seem to be hopping on the train. Maybe they do want to make America Great Again.
Stalin always had spies who switched sides shot, believing if they switched once you could never trust them.
Well, you know, the honesty thing.
Personal liberties means the right to wear a low cut blouse at the presidential inauguration.
The horror, the horror. #2
