PHOENIX — Gov. Katie Hobbs has signed an executive order instructing multiple state agencies to create a task force focused on security operations in Arizona's border counties.
Dubbed "Operation Desert Guardian," the governor's task force seeks to partner with local agencies in Yuma, Santa Cruz, Pima and Cochise counties to expand security operations and dismantle criminal networks.
The executive order states that the Arizona departments of public safety, homeland security and emergency affairs shall work together to deter and interdict transnational crime organizations.
The governor's office said Operation Desert Guardian will be funded with a $28 million balance in the state’s border security fund.
Hobbs, a Democrat, is not the first Arizona governor to use their executive powers to address issues at the southern border.
Republican Gov. Doug Ducey established the Arizona Border Strike Force during his tenure with the similar initiative of utilizing DPS to help tackle border crimes.
Hobbs notably vetoed Republican-backed legislation that would have empowered state law enforcement officers to arrest individuals for border-related crimes, a job traditionally reserved for federal officials. Voters in Arizona ended up passing a proposition in 2024 allowing local police to make those types of arrests.
Is she doing this to counteract the Border Patrol?

They should go after Arizona’s newest “senator” from Chicago. Making a “snowbird” from Chicago a Senator is probably about the dumbest thing they could do. Especially since his papa went to prison for being a drug dealer.

That was kind of my first thought. I didn't see anything in her order about coordinating efforts and cooperating with related Federal agencies.
Sounds like a COYA move.
