Opinion: How Republicans are going to blow it and put Democrats back in charge
The Hill ^ | Feb 26, 2025 | Derek Hunter

President Trump is as popular as he’s ever been, and he’s enacting exactly what he said he would do — a trait all too rare among politicians. The two things are not mutually exclusive, however — he is popular precisely because he’s working on exactly what he said he would.

But Republicans in Congress risk blowing all the goodwill and the record approval ratings by not doing what is necessary to have Trump’s back. As the old saying goes, no one can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory like Republicans.

Trump has effectively choked off the border, with illegal immigrant entries cratering from the Biden administration’s open border policies. The deportations of criminals have started, and the welfare benefits have been cut off. But to build the wall and make those Trump changes permanent requires Congress to act.

They’re moving … slowly.

Regulations are being cut, dead weight in the bureaucracy is being laid off and previously wasted money is being clawed back, but Republicans are getting nervous. They may be the only people dumb enough to believe those shouting loudly in defense of mid-level bureaucrats they have never met.........

Democrats march in lock-step. They have uniformity of purpose and thought. Republicans, in contrast, are a coalition of individuals, many of whom, when they find themselves in a position to keep their campaign promises, act like their bluff has been called. Today, most Democrats are leftists. On the other side, it’s different. All Republicans talk the conservative talk, but only about two-thirds of them walk the walk.

Democrats are willing to sacrifice office for the progressive cause — witness the predictable electoral massacre they suffered after they voted for Obamacare.

Unfortunately the stupid party will likely fail based on their razor thin majorities and rinos.

The HILL is not necessarily our friend, but they accurately state the Republican Congress is fully able to mess up the MAGA agenda.

As we all know when a MAGA issue is debated and voted upon in Congress the SWAMP Republicans outnumber the MAGA Republicans.

So, the premise is that Thune and Johnson are smarter than Trump? I doubt it.

I have no doubt that Trump is working to INCREASE his lead in the Legislature in 2026. These guys probably see their own necks on the block, but I would be surprised if they could do a lot about it.

Well, even with a tiny majority, the House passed Trump’s budget/tax plan last night, so maybe there is hope this time around. This country might finally be getting things turned around and moving in a positive direction.

“””All Republicans talk the conservative talk, but only about two-thirds of them walk the walk.”””

I take exception to THE HILL on the above statement.

I see that only about one-third of the Republicans in Congress walk the talk.

The House just passed the budget President Trump requested.

They are doing what they are told.

Everything else is just noise.

Republicans never wanted to be in charge. They prefer being a controlled opposition.

I would not trust Congress as far as I could throw them.

What I do trust is President Trump’s ability to keep kicking them in the rear end as they get through one finish line after another.

That is what we have seen so far on key cabinet appointees—including several the “experts” thought were “impossible” to get approved.

Agree. One third.

But it’s a money thing - constantly needing to sell out here or there to build up a war chest for the next election.

Big pharama owns the Republican party. They also had no problem with the illegal invasion of our country.

Trump is remaking the party into an America first party but will take time.

This is a silly article. Everyone is happy with the exposure of all the fraud and abuse and money saving.

Add $5,000 checks to everyone from the money saved and Trump’s overall approval could crack the 60% mark with all American voters.

Need to audit the voter roles and clean those up.

Need election day results SAME DAY of the election - SCOTUS should require that.

I've seen it happen more times than I'd like to admit. From failing to initiate a federal marriage amendment (which WOULD HAVE PASSED at the time) to having a repeal of Obamacare at the threshold and inexcusably dropping the ball (through RINO McCain.)

Trump should use the Epstein flight logs and USAID LOGS to encourage Republicans TO GET BUSY

That’s the stark difference between conservatives and liberals. Conservatives believe in independent thought while liberals believe in groupthink.

One of the impressive features of the Trump Admin game plan is how well they have structured it to keep the Republicans in congress in line

Never underestimate the Republicans ability to seize defeat from the jaws of victory but Team Trump is making it harder for them to do so than in the past

With RINOs like Murkowski and Collins in The Senate and counterparts in The House, this may be proven correct. OTOH, as professional pols they will read which way the wind is blowing and act to preserve their jobs.

The vast majority of the hard core Quisling RINOs are either dead or have been defeated in primaries.

The small remaining numbers have been unable to cause much damage—at least so far.

Winning. People need to understand that. It’s not the same as the old GOP trick of bending over and dropping their drawers for the DemonRATS.
