Trump Proposes Fines, Prison Time for Migrants Who Don’t Join Registry

The Trump administration created a registry for immigrants in the U.S. illegally to submit their personal information or face fines and prison time, according to documents including a draft regulation seen by The Wall Street Journal. Immigrants in the country illegally including children 14 and older would be required to submit fingerprints and home addresses to the registry, the documents show. Immigrants who qualify but fail to register could be fined up to $5,000 and sentenced to up to six months in prison. The move to criminalize being in the U.S. illegally would build on the Trump administration’s efforts to toughen immigration laws. Previously, immigrants in the country illegally were committing a civil offense and could be detained and deported, but weren’t considered to have committed a crime. “Aliens in this country illegally face a choice,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem wrote in a memo describing the new policy. “They can return home and follow the legal process to come to the United States or they can deal with the consequences of continuing to violate our laws.” The administration’s plans rely on obscure provisions of immigration law that have proved impractical to enforce in the past. Pursuing cases against alleged offenders could tie up prosecutorial resources and swell the incarcerated population, legal experts said. Immigrants in the country illegally rarely have the means to pay such steep fines, the experts said. A law passed in 1940 created an immigrant registry to catch suspected communists. For years, the government aired television ads reminding all immigrants, including permanent residents, to register annually at local post offices. The system fell into disuse by the 1960s, when the government decided it was too costly and provided little benefit.

It will be interesting to see how this is implemented.

I have a friend who came to the USA 30 years ago with his parents.

I am wondering if it will be in his best interest to register.

Throw out all illegals. No exceptions. If they don’t self-deport, seize their assets and toss them.

Immigrants Invaders in the U.S. illegally shouldn't "register" for anything - they should be deported immediately.

Illegal entry is a Federal crime AND a civil offense.

"Yes, entering the United States illegally can be a felony, depending on the circumstances.

Explanation

The severity of punishment increases with the number of times someone has illegally re-entered the U.S.

Other factors that affect punishment include whether the person has been convicted of an aggravated felony.

Illegal entry is a federal crime and a civil offense. In addition to criminal penalties, people who enter the U.S. without authorization may face civil immigration detention and deportation proceedings.

So now the aliens will be tying up the lines at the post office along with those renewing their passports for all of their family members.

I love the kid that works as a porter at one of the diners near me.

So respectful, always brings us extra coleslaw and bread before the meal :) Refills our diet cokes.

I chat with him for a bit each time and throw him 5 bucks,

Obviously Hispanic, early 20s...very likely illegal.

But if he came here illegally, he’s gonna have to go...OR we open up a pathway to permanent residence because we CANT have anyone walking around being here illegally.

I don’t think Trump is interested in a pathway to citizenship so he will likely have to go.

He worked hard, hopefully saved some good money to build a future with..and he shouldn’t have been here at all so whatever he gained from working here is gravy.

Personal feelins can’t be involved

Something is a crime or it’s not.

If he’s the good kid he seems to be, then his real country could use hm...build THAT country into something not worth escaping.

If his country is beyond hope, then maybe he willf find his way back legally one day.

“ . The move to criminalize being in the U.S. illegally would build on the Trump administration’s efforts”

No, the crime would be not registering.

Typical media lies.

Not true at all.

go home and follow the legal process is his pathway. They are here illegally, that path should have been closed forever. He is giving them one chance to get it right.
