Starmer tells Trump: Peace can’t be won if you shut out Ukraine

Sir Keir Starmer has praised President Trump for “changing the global conversation” on Ukraine for the better and creating an opportunity for peace, but warned him that that would not happen if he tried to shut out Kyiv.

Britain is seeking to make clear areas of disagreement with the United States administration without directly criticising the president. Starmer will meet Trump this week on a high-stakes visit to Washington during which he will try to convince him not to abandon Ukraine.

Starmer said that Putin “does not hold all the cards” and David Lammy, the foreign secretary, hit out at Putin’s “foreign policy by lies” and issued a veiled warning that Trump should not trust Russian promises.

Lammy cast doubt on peace talks as he effectively set out a series of improbable conditions for success. “If Russia is serious about a lasting peace that respects Ukraine’s sovereignty, Ukraine’s independence and the United Nations Charter, guarantees Ukraine’s security against future aggression, rejects imperialism, then Britain will listen,” he said.

Branding Putin a dictator — the word that Trump used last week for President Zelensky —as well as a “KGB agent who operates by deception”, Lammy said that Russia bore responsibility for a “brutal, illegal, unprovoked invasion”.

He reeled off a long list of past broken promises to highlight Russia’s history of “betrayal”. Lammy said: “This is foreign policy by lies. And we must respond by being true to ourselves and provide the support Ukraine needs to stay strong.”

What does Starmer know about war, peace, or victory? He’s too busy bowing to Mecca 🕋

How about if we shut out England and France. That seems like the only chance for peace.

Utterly stupid, no one is winning peace, it is being negotiated.

Language of hateful elites who do not care how many commoners die.

I don’t like these Euroweenies getting involved in negotiations, but...

Starmer has a point.

Shutting out Ukraine in the negotiations and decisions, is akin to Trump not being able to defend himself in court cases, like what actually happened. The most interested party must be heard the most.

A peace deal will be brokered, thanks to Trump. The rest is just the sound of little people trying to sound relevant.

Shut up, Starmer. We know which side you’re on and it doesn’t involve lasting peace.

These Europeans are childish. Trump doesn’t need them to explain Russia or Putin. They aren’t willing to spend enough on their own defense.

I assume that Zelensky wants Russia to return all the occupied territories including Crimea.

We know that's not going to happen.

The war is currently a stalemate. It can last for another 10 years. By then, Ukraine can completely fall apart. Like South Vietnam. Or Afghanistan.

Might as well as call for a ceasefire while they still have an army.

What leverage does Starmer have?

Trump knows the answer because he constantly considers that question when engaging any leader.

The so-called “special relationship” is little more than pretense resting on tradition to a pragmatist like Trump.

Starmer’s boy Lammy who is mentioned in the article poisoned the well of good will that may have been a carry over from previous UK regimes.

This article only served as confirmation that Starmer is going to meet Trump on Trump’s turf with Trump’s popularity at an all time with NOTHING of substance to bring to the table.

Sad day for the UK that this pathetic man is coming to Trump holding an office that has come to represent a nation that is a shell of what it was in the last century.

Everyone has an opinion yet did nothing to end the war. Bunch of back seat drivers.

In every court ordered mediation that I attended, the mediator meets with each party separately. I’m sure that Trump’s team will meet with officials from Ukraine if they haven’t already done so.

Ukraine has no clout. Zelensky is a greedy little puppet and he will have no say in how this goes down.

They may pull a seat over to the big boy table for him but he will be there to listen only.

Zelensky has certainly been heard the most already. He has been quite bellicose and that has done more harm than good in negotiations.

The war is currently a stalemate.

Hey! You noticed!

It can last for another 10 years. By then, Ukraine can completely fall apart.

You think Russia will come out of it unscathed? Not likely at all. Ukraine is already devastated, but continuing to fight. Russia has to continue to fight, or they'll be embarrassed in front of the whole world for being so inept that they can't win a war against a much smaller country. So, the damage on both sides is mutual. Ukraine may lose hundreds of thousands of soldiers, but Russia will lose at least twice as many. And Russia being such an economic disaster before the war, will end up poorer than many third-world countries. Russia cannot afford to fight another 2 years, much less 10 years. Like South Vietnam. Or Afghanistan.

Starmer says as his nation knows no peace and children are gang raped by Muslims because his government says it’s racist to resist.

If it is being negotiated then Ukraine needs to be included.
