Derek Copeland was 11 days away from hitting his one-year mark with the U.S. Department of Agriculture when he received his termination letter on Feb. 14.
"You have not demonstrated that your further employment at the Agency would be in the public interest," the notice said.
Copeland was shocked. His performance appraisal stated that he was "fully successful" in performing the critical functions of his job as a training specialist at the National Detector Dog Training Center in Newnan, Ga.
Moreover, while he'd been at the USDA less than a year, he'd spent his career working with dogs. Copeland had recently retired from two decades of service in the Air Force, most of that time in canine units, running kennels and training dogs to sniff out narcotics and explosives, among other tasks.

In his more than three decades practicing employment law, Branch has never seen a purge like what has unfolded over the past week. The mass firing of newer employees doesn't make much sense to him.
"Probationary employees are usually ... the most industrious employees there," he says. "These folks know that they have a year to prove themselves, some folks two years, and if they don't, they can be terminated for any reason."
NPR is just the radio wing of the far left “public broadcasting”.
It is time we revoked the television licenses of all local stations who are affiliated with the “public broadcasting” propaganda.
Enough is enough.
He worked there less than a year and got fired. Big deal. Find another job.
They let the cat out of the bag! Non probationary employees, full us in on them.
The Leftist media is in overdrive with their “the sky is falling” and “sob stories” of government workers. They did not have the same reaction to the private sector laying off employees due to the Biden economy and inflation. It is a shame the media has zero ethics or honesty. But then, they are 90 percent democrat.
desperately seeking a sob story that will stick
We never should have relied on two people to secure our food system.
Bingo!
Poor babies. You’ve been on the taxpayer’s tit for too long.
I was in the Sydney airport on my way to NZ and the sniffer dogs came out. I had to throw away the apple i was going to eat on the plane.
from what I read, it seems Trump can more easily unload the probationary employees, so that’s where he’s got to start.
I once worked a job where they laid off a whole shift of people, didn’t matter who was there how long, just a whole shift gone.
If wasn’t fun to experience but, they made a business decision, and you go on unemployment find another job and move on.
I don’t recall the news media following up so much with any business which had big layoffs before.
People knew this was the plan, but didn’t want to believe it.
The both of them should take dementia joe’s advice and “learn to code”, problem solved.
So what. Sometimes it’s easier to get rid of new employees especially when the company is hampered by unions; these people are cut because have fewer union protections.
This happens when the company has to make big cuts in expenses in order to survive.
This example makes the case once again that federal government should not be unionized. Then, it would be easier to keep the best employees.
And doing a heck of a job...NOT!
So, they wanted us to eat dogs?
They pity party posts from the LSM are so frequent and reek of so much desperation that I think it is beginning to actually harden people even more.
I hear most saying more and faster, not to so0w down at all, everyone not a gov worker has gone through this for decades and the lib gov never cared, I think most just have no compassion left for these previously insulted self appointed betters.
Did they secure our food supply by preventing China from buying massive amounts of US farmland? No? You’re fired!
Trump can’t defund NPR fast enough to cut off these whiny sob stories They always look for one or two sob stories rather than focus on the million man bloat in FedGov. President Trump, axe all federal grants to NPR. They are your enemy
They don’t seem to be securing it very well. Everything that hits the shelves ends up being recalled for some disease. What the hell does the “military vet” have to sob about. He’s already getting a government check from retirement from the Air Force. This article sucks.
Why does the Republican party force taxpayers to fund this leftist organization?
Republican voters have been calling for the defunding of NPR, PBS and other left-wing propaganda “news” sources for decades.
Republican legislators need to listen to their constituents.
Stop funding our enemies.
But he was doing a great job!
