BERLIN (AP) — Exit polls show opposition leader Friedrich Merz’s conservatives leading in Germany’s national election. They indicate that Alternative for Germany is heading for the strongest showing for a far-right party since World War II.
The exit polls for ARD and ZDF public television show Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s center-left Social Democrats on track for their worst postwar result in a national parliamentary election, and expected to be in third place.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below.
BERLIN (AP) — German voters are choosing a new government in an election Sunday dominated by worries about the years-long stagnation of Europe’s biggest economy, pressure to curb migration and growing uncertainty over the future of Ukraine and Europe’s alliance with the United States. The center-right opposition is favored to win, while polls point to the strongest result for a far-right party since World War II.
Germany is the most populous country in the 27-nation European Union and a leading member of NATO. It has been Ukraine’s second-biggest weapons supplier, after the U.S. It will be central to shaping the continent’s response to the challenges of the coming years, including the Trump administration’s confrontational foreign and trade policy.
The top candidates, conservative front-runner Friedrich Merz and current Chancellor Olaf Scholz of the Social Democrats, voted within minutes of each other in different parts of the country on Sunday morning.

“Conservatives”, yeah right.
“Far right”
True Conservatives are in 2nd with almost 20%
Merz has already ruled out forming a government with AfD.
Looks like its SSDD in Germany.
Should call him Merz-kel.
I wonder how many germans are lying to exit pollsters and AfD will do better than predicted by exit polls? We will know in about 1:45
Our Founding Fathers were wise, weren’t they.
If freedom loving people in Europe had any sense they’d push for what we’ve got, a constitutional republic.
To me, SPD is "far left". Won't they rule out on forming a coalition with Merz?
🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪 AfD! 🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) February 23, 2025
All political parties have ruled out working with AfD, I heard an interesting thing about this situation, the more AfD is excluded from power, the more the leading party has to form a coalition with extreme left-wing parties like the Greens, etc., resulting in AfD gaining even more voters because of getting excluded from power.
Conservative Germans in 2024 are running on 1996 Christian Democrat Union principals. Havent seen an actual thing to the left of Kohl, other than perhaps a bit softer on East German slackers who have finally all retired from pulling pay checks.
He’s just a male version of Merkel.
The “far right” is having the strongest showing since World War II. LOL. Gee, AP. What could you ever mean by that? Could you be suggesting that the AdF is the same as the National Socialists?
1:45...today?
What?
They don’t have a state of Schmalifornia, where counting takes nearly a month?
It appears everybody is fed up with the UN’s global freeloading invasions. The bass turds need to go back home and build their own “better life” instead of trying to steal one.
They're like the Tories in the UK.
Or Romney/Paul Republicans in USA before 2016.
They're trying to impose one world government against our will.
AdF is the same as the National Socialists?
Add an ‘o’ and an ‘l’ and that makes AdolF!
Yes, and I am quite chuffed they did so well 🙂
