I thought all the intrusive surveillance at airports was to avoid this sort of thing. It’s been DECADES since this was a thing. I’m remembering bomb scares but not remembering what decade they were.

If you are ‘near Turkmenistan’ why not continue on to Delhi? If for some reason you need to land quickly why is Italy the considered the closest place?
Might need runway space, might be less busy airport at this time frame to handle an actual bomb ?

The aircraft, a Boeing 777-300ER, departed John F. Kennedy International Airport earlier today and was scheduled for a non-stop transcontinental flight to India. However, mid-flight, crew members received intelligence of a possible explosive device onboard, prompting an immediate response in line with international aviation security protocols.
Emergency Procedures Initiated
