WARSAW, Feb 22 (Reuters) - Poland said on Saturday it has been paying for Ukraine's Starlink subscription and will continue to do so despite sources saying the United States could consider cutting Ukraine's access to the satellite internet system.

U.S. negotiators pressing Kyiv for access to Ukraine's critical minerals have raised the possibility of cutting the country's access to Elon Musk's vital Starlink satellite internet system, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Starlink provides crucial internet connectivity to the war-torn country and its military.

"We pay and will continue to pay a subscription fee for satellite internet for Ukraine," Poland's Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski said in a post on Musk-owned social media platform X.

"I cannot imagine that someone could decide to terminate a business contract for a commercial service to which Poland is a party," added Gawkowski, who is also Poland's digital affairs minister.

SpaceX, which operates Starlink, did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Z is a World Class Leech! Imagine if Ukraine ever did join NATO. There would be no end to all the “emergencies”.

Is this commercial starlink service or military grade service that the good polish people are paying for?

There is no military grade Starlink. And the good Polish people have provided a great deal of assistance to Ukraine, including almost 1000 tanks. That was all the doing of Duda, the finest European leader throughout this episode.

The point is that the cable contract is held by a third party. So it is not so subject to whimsical (sometimes) decisions by E.Musk.

Also Poland is an influential player (given its military position) with the sort of Euro countries that may want to make trouble for Musk.

Musk needs allies. You don’t just blow off the Poles.

Musk has already said this is a lie. The US government is not considering cancelling Ukraine’s StarLink

Why are some FReepers so quick to believe every fake news story -.obviously designed to divide us?

The point is they can’t just cancel if the contract is held by the Poles. This goes back, I think, to 2022-23 when Musk almost cancelled Starlink in Ukraine.

The Polish government believed it, otherwise they wouldn’t have responded.

“Time for you to be a little more imaginative, sir. . . “

I suspect that there have been enough war crimes by Ukraine to justifying ending the service, if they want to.

I see. Which war crimes are those? Or do you get all this from an office block in Petersburg.

“I see. Which war crimes are those? Or do you get all this from an office block in Petersburg.”

Part of the Trump peace agreement will be a FULL ACCOUNTING of Ukrainian war crimes, so just hang loose until then.

No, they didn’t - the deputy prime minister even said he couldn’t imagine it being true..
