WASHINGTON — President Trump revealed Friday that he’s considering merging the US Postal Service with the Commerce Department.
Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that his administration is looking at a “merger” of the two government institutions to increase efficiency.
“We want to have a post office that works well and doesn’t lose massive amounts of money, and we’re thinking about doing that, and will be a form of a merger, but it’ll remain the Postal Service, and I think it’ll operate a lot better than it has been over the years,” Trump said.
He had floated the consideration back in December after learning that the USPS lost $9.5 billion in the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, according to the Washington Post. The astounding loss was up from $6.5 billion the previous year.
The Postal Service has blamed its increase in losses on a jump in worker compensation and pension liabilities.

The Constitution requires that there be a postal service, but not a commerce department, yes?
I’m sure Trump hasn’t forgotten that the USPS assisted in The Steal.
Why not combine USPS with the Federal Election Commission,
and put it all under Kash’s FBI just for integrity’s sake?
Interesting thought: The USPS having a “loser status” makes a very convenient guise for more federal money laundering. “Gee its funny how we keep pouring money into the underperforming USPS and its always in the negative. Better give it some more money *wink-wink*”.
It would still exist as a seperate entity within commerce, like the USCG still exists as a separate entity within DHS (was under Treasury before that). Of course I think the USCG gets pretty shirt shrift from DHS as DHS exists to distribute pork around the country, mostly, and USCG has real operational needs which seem uninteresting to DHS.
The USCG could use some new icebreakers.
Merge it with Fed Ex or UPS
Make stamps and on-time delivery great again.
Switch the pension plan over to 401K plan. Note that no other service walks door to door and in all kinds of weather each day 6? Days per week. I do not see how it could ever exist without loosing money.
One huge problem is that a postal service in mandated by the Constitution. That doesn’t means it has to be a union dominated sluggish monstrosity but it means it has to exist in some form as a government entity.

“Note that no other service walks door to door and in all kinds of weather each day 6?”
Not anymore. Just this winter in Kansas they wouldn’t deliver.
I have the deepest respect for the USCG because they take pride in going into the heart of a megastorm to rescue others even with barely sea-worthy cutters or aircraft sometimes (my experience with them was 20 years ago so hopefully that's better now). But beside search and rescue, they are incredibly key at the smooth and safe running of our ports. I spent a day with the Captain of the Port of New York back in the day and it was really impressive seeing how much the Coast Guard is doing there day in and day out.
The U.S. Postal Service is included in the U.S. Constitution under Article I, Section 8, Clause 7, known as the Postal Clause. It grants Congress the power:
“To establish Post Offices and Post Roads.”
This clause gives Congress the authority to create and regulate a national postal system. Over time, this power led to the establishment of the United States Post Office Department, which was later reorganized into the United States Postal Service (USPS) in 1971 as an independent agency under the Postal Reorganization Act.
While the Constitution grants Congress the power to establish and maintain postal services, it does not require the government to operate a postal system indefinitely, nor does it specify how it must function.
When is President Trump going to demolish the E.E.O.C.? It is a duplication of the N.L.R.B.!
“...The Constitution requires that there be a postal service...”
without looking it up, I think it says
something about “maintaining post offices” and “Post Roads”.
Maybe we should just have:
“The Department of Authorized Things”;
and “The Department of Unauthorized Things” !!!

The U.S. Postal Service annually loses billions of dollars, but can find millions of ballots in certain places when the Rats need them to rig an election. Reorganization of the USPS is long past due.
