Musk compares DOGE to Clinton's government efficiency initiative, but there are big differences

Clinton reduced the federal workforce by more than 377,000 employees.

Within weeks of his inauguration, he signed an executive order calling on agencies to cut 100,000 jobs over three years, with 10% or more coming from high-level federal workers. In 1994, Clinton signed the bipartisan Federal Workforce Restructuring Act, which offered $25,000 to buyout non-Defense Department workers.

By the end of his term, Clinton reduced the federal government's workforce by more than 377,000 employees. But that all unfolded over several years, and with the help of Congress.

In an attempt to defend the Department of Government Efficiency's controversial moves, Elon Musk is likening the aggressive government overhaul to a Clinton-era task force that oversaw a shrinking of the federal workforce.

"Sounds familiar," Musk wrote in one X post over the weekend in response to a 40-minute compilation video of President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore talking about their effort to modernize the government.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt made the same argument on Fox News on Monday, saying the administration is doing what "Democrat politicians promised the American people they would do for decades."

MORE: Here are all the agencies federal workers are being fired from But policy experts, including some involved in the Clinton initiative, emphasize there are big differences between then and now.

Led by Vice President Gore, the task force delivered a report to Clinton with more than 380 recommendations to reform the government, following his directives to make the government "both less expensive and more efficient," and to "change the culture of our national bureaucracy away from complacency and entitlement toward initiative and empowerment."

It’s irrelevant to the left because they didn’t think or implement this time around so it’s bad because the right is doing it.

I noticed on Jesse Waters last night when he had Jonny interviewinf DOGE protestors the majority had no clue the fraud he was uncovering and money he was saving and what it was used for.

I see little difference here. Clinton did it his way. Trump will do it the tougher way.
These days the shirk at home Federals think they have golden lifetime appointment. In the Clinton era they did not. The economy was better, so the Federal/swampers workers would find new jobs. And better than that at Burger King.

What was Federal debt back then? A trillion or two dollars? Plus due to Newt Gingrich pressures, Bill Clintoon had a few balanced budgets with small surpluses.

“Calling firings strategic cuts does not change the fact that they were in fact terminated.”

An off loaded Federal shirker, is a good Federal “worker”.... Most of them earning a pajamas paycheck. Federal work from home, the biggest scam ever, that Elon/DOGE are putting an end to.

THere is another part of this, the Reinventing Government effort was a huge effort to “privatize” government even core government function turning over government monopolies and monopsynies that were likely inefficient, but were somewhat constainted by the order of government in how far out of control they could get to private entities. We are seeing the results of that today. As DOGE is doing, you need to an audit of all taxpayer dollars and look at the function and performance of each of those dollars. Back then reinventing government was Yeah Haw Boys mount up we’re gonna rope ourselves some fine fat cows today.

Oh please, what a ruse. The Left doesn’t care how it was done, they care that it is being done at all. If Trump did it exactly like Clinton did, you know that they would be saying the same things.

Somebody better tell Bill Clinton that he is MAGA now.

But that all unfolded over several years, and with the help of Congress.

A REPUBLICAN Congress that forced him to do it. Prior to 1994, when the Dems controlled Congress, he was trying to Federalize the entire healthcare system into social medicine. Jeez ABC, stick to writing “Biden is as sharp as a tack” stories.
