Ukraine Is Not the Problem
National Review ^ | February 20, 2025 | The Editors

Posted on 02/20/2025 7:07:42 AM PST by karpov

Predictably enough, the Ukrainian government has objected to its exclusion from the peace talks Trump administration officials held with their Russian counterparts this week in Riyadh and, for its trouble, is getting slammed by what is supposed to be its ally, the United States.

In breathtaking remarks to reporters, President Trump poured contempt on Ukraine for its frustration. “But today I heard, ‘Oh, well, we weren’t invited.’ Well, you’ve been there for three years,” Trump said of Russia’s second invasion of Ukraine. “You should’ve ended it in three years. You should have never started it. You could have made a deal.”

Uh, Ukraine didn’t fire Russian missiles at itself or direct a Russian armed column at its own capital in 2022. There’s moral equivalence, and then there’s a total moral inversion.

When Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky pushed back, Trump came back at him harder, calling him a “Dictator without Elections” who “probably wants to keep the ‘gravy train’ going.”

Ukraine is indeed under martial law at the moment because (see above) it’s been invaded by a hostile power and there’s a war on. You don’t need to portray Ukraine as a shining city on a hill to acknowledge that it is much more committed to democracy and the rule of law than is Russia, whose malign autocratic leader Trump never thinks to call “a dictator.”

Needless to say, Ukraine is not the problem here. As far as the Kremlin is concerned, its sins are its existence as a sovereign state with a national identity distinct from Russia’s, and its failure to roll over and accept its assigned role as a defenseless satellite state of Mother Russia.

I agree with having our European allies take the primary role in helping Ukraine defend itself, but the war is Putin's fault, not Zelensky's, and Russia's fault, not Ukraine's. We have to deal with Putin, but he is a monster.

No. Zelinsky is grifting graft encrusted monster. Z is preparing to flee Ukraine with crates
full of cash and bullion. Zelinsky will be gone by Easter. Buh-bye!

But Zelensky has said that there is 100 Billion Dollars of US money that cannot be accounted for. He is a problem as Ukraine is a corrupt country.

An unelected dictator, Zelenskyy admits that
<><>half of the $350B tax dollars we sent him is “MISSING.”
<><>The Biden govt stupidly spent $200B MORE than Europe,
<><>Europe’s money is guaranteed,
<><>while the US will get nothing back.
<><>Z refuses to have Elections,
<><>he’s very low in Ukrainian Polls,
<><>he was singularly good at playing Biden “like a fiddle.”

All true but.

Zelensky has no plan and no capability to take back territory.

Ukraine don’t draft it’s 18 to 21 year olds.

Trump was going to jump on whichever side didn’t cooperate, and Zelensky is being an absolute idiot in this regard.

I’m sorry to say it, but Ukrainians are addicted to democrats, even though Obama and Biden both got them invaded.

They don’t recognize that and they blame Trump even though he kept them safe.

I can’t even believe that Zelensky is this stupid. Europe can’t and won’t replace our weapons. And Trump is not going to take this crap from Zelensky.

I disagree when Trump says Ukraine could have made a “deal” to prevent the invasion. Russia was going to take advantage of Biden no matter what.

But in the end Trump has my support, and it’s Zelensky that needs to wise up.

Trump didn’t pour contempt on Ukraine. He poured contempt on Zelensky.

Why would he talk/work with the very guy that sat back and let him be impeached because of a conversation with him in the past?

The very guy that refuses to let the people he is sending to their deaths to have an election.

He wants a seat the get elected. Just like Trump just did.

Fool Trump once, shame on the comedian. Fool Trump twice, then shame on Trump.

And you are welcome to peel off some of your wages to fund the corruption. USAID will gladly spend your cash.

“Ukraine is indeed under martial law at the moment because (see above) it’s been invaded by a hostile power and there’s a war on.”

Over 620,000 Americans died in the American Civil War, which was totally devastating to America in every way, yet elections were still held as usual in America.
What’s special about Ukraine?

"..but the war is Putin's fault, not Zelensky's, and Russia's fault, not Ukraine's."

Completely wrong.

Russia was goaded by the eu and biden when considering ukraine to join nato.

zelensky was too dumb to just say no.

biden authorized russia by requesting only a "limited" engagement.

This war started back in 2014 when the US State Dept directed a coup against the elected President of Ukraine who was aligned with Russia.

Sure he is a part of the problem, for he is the president, and was the president at the time the Russia began amassing at Ukraine's eastern border. . He had almost a year before Russia actually made the incursion. In that time he had amble opportunity to engage the bear in peaceful negotiations. He had almost 3 years, after becoming Ukraine's president on May 20, 2019 to solve the bloodshed in eastern Ukraine, which was one of his campaign promises when he was campaigning for the presidency.

So, he is not blameless in any way shape or form.

Petro Poroshenko had already made the trade agreement with the EU. So, that would have left him with the bargaining chip of remaining neutral, and not joining NATO to have secured peace, and Ukraine would still be intact, and millions of human lives would not have been lost.

But he was willing to take the risk at the insistence of leaders of NATO member nations who cajoled him into believing they would have his back. Problem was, they never said they had his front covered.

Zelensky could have secured Trump’s support by agreeing to the mineral deal and expressing gratitude to the United States for their support. Instead, Zelensky followed advice from idiots like the Vindman brothers and from the Democrats, who hate Trump and have no love for Ukraine.
