Tories demand Starmer stands up to Trump’s ‘lies’ over Ukraine

Sir Keir Starmer must push back against Donald Trump’s “lies” about Ukraine when they meet in Washington next week, former Tory defence ministers have said.

The US president is facing a backlash after claiming Ukraine initiated the war with Russia, despite the fact it was Vladimir Putin’s nation that launched a full-scale invasion three years ago.

Next week, Sir Keir will hold his first face-to-face talks with Mr Trump since he entered the White House in a meeting set to be dominated by the shape of any potential peace deal.

Sir Gavin Williamson, the Tory MP who was defence secretary between November 2017 and May 2019, urged the Prime Minister to push back on Mr Trump’s claims.

Might be a risky play if Trump can produce receipts.

if Trump can produce receipts

You mean have the NSA turn away from spying on Americans long enough to do their job?

Starmer is repeating an American Media lie.

Trump never said Ukraine started the war.

I think if we ask for all the money’s been going including the money’s been frozen from Russian assets not to mention what we have contributed to this war that’ll shut him up actually I think that’s what the problem is they were taking money from us probably from USAID and now they are hurting

Starting a war doesn’t necessarily mean you fire the first shot. Sadly, that is what we did to the Japanese in the run up to Pearl Harbor. The trade restrictions and our push to prevent them from attaining resources (energy and raw food stuffs) to fuel their country pushed them into making the mistake on December 7th and pulled us into the war we were working hard to stay out of for the most part. Granted they were trying to expand but it was none of our business. Same parallel here, Ukraine was making moves that threaten Russia, mainly wanting NATO presence in their country which directly is a threat to Russia.

Well, actually it was the US that started the war but that discussion is for a different thread.

Boy they seem very upset with us, maybe they should demand we get out of the situation and let Europe sort it out alone. I’m okay with that too.

Two generations ago, Maggie Thatcher wrestled control of the Conservative Party away from what she called “the Wets” (Tories whose politics were essentially indistinguishable from those of the left). They need a Thatcher 2.0.

Suppose Trump won in 2020, it would only have postponed the inevitable.

Instead of the war happening in 2022, it'll happen in 2025 because it's likely we'll vote for a Democrat after Trump.

I agree with you, at least from the perspective of creating political conditions where tensions were extremely high and then refusing to allow any diplomatic effort to defuse them.
