Speaker Mike Johnson is staring down at least a dozen Republican holdouts on the budget blueprint he wants to put on the House floor in the coming days — and he can only afford to lose one member and still approve the resolution along party lines.
Johnson and his whip team are using the current week-long recess to ramp up engagement with undecided Republicans, including seven members — if not more — who have raised serious concerns about deep cuts to Medicaid in the House GOP budget resolution. Several other members are wary of a move to raise the debt limit as part of the plan.
In private meetings and calls with these members over the last few days, Republican leaders have argued that adopting the budget blueprint is simply the first step toward being able to craft the massive legislative package to enact President Donald Trump’s domestic agenda through the filibuster-skirting budget reconciliation process.
According to four people granted anonymity to share private conversations, GOP leaders are assuring members they can still debate the specifics of that package in the weeks ahead — appealing to them not to stand in the way of delivering Trump’s biggest priorities.
But the fiscal blueprint adopted by the House Budget Committee last week, to which GOP leaders negotiated a last-minute addition to appease hard-liners, would now require panels to reach a new target of $2 trillion in spending cuts to pay for the bill. The House Energy and Commerce Committee will need to cut $880 billion from programs under its purview, including Medicaid.

Trump needs to get on the phone and get these folks in line.
Ahh yes likely just more leftist yellow journalism form Politico, Headline Bias as usual.
Every speaker faces challenges on any serious budget / legislation.
Politico rules;
Republican, trouble, dying, unreasonable
Democrat, balanced, supported, collegiate
Basically take the article with a HUGE grain of salt.
I support Pres. Trump wholeheartedly, though I am confused as to why their needs to be HUGE cuts to Medicaid, especially with the DOGE team identifying SO MUCH WASTE & Fraud?!
“though I am confused as to why their needs to be HUGE cuts to Medicaid”
fraud in it. root out the fraud, abuse, keep the legit.
Politico running on fumes
Holding out leads to buying off, so there’s incentive for this at this point.
I don’t think Medicaid would be that hard. Weren’t states allowed to expand the program to 138 percent of poverty level income, with the feds funding 90% of that? Just reverse that.
Q: Is baseline budgeting still in use...?
There will be a lot of amendments and changes this week.
I think at the moment it’s just a shell as this is how its done when the Senate goes first. (Technically and constitutionally!) they’re not supposed to
They have identified a lot of wasteful spending but they aren’t really going to do anything about it. If they are being honest (which they NEVER are) there would be no need to raise the spending limit. If they shut the government down then I hope they don’t pay anyone for not working. But it will just turn out to be another paid vacation.
Politico funded with American tax payer money by rat politicians and thier agenda

I've seen a few, but very few instances where the issues they have identified have actual been addressed.
Until the waste and fraud have been acted on, there are no savings.
Cuts to medicaid?
Unless you can count all of the
ullegals included.
Like a California wildfire.
Where’d the water go?
“I support Pres. Trump wholeheartedly, though I am confused as to why their needs to be HUGE cuts to Medicaid, especially with the DOGE team identifying SO MUCH WASTE & Fraud?!”
Careful... That kind of critical thinking will get you in trouble around here. It makes too much sense. You are not supposed to ask logical questions. You are supposed to just follow blindly without question. :)
To begin with it is not “Trump’s Bill” as it is being sold by these crooked used car salesmen. It is their own bill and is full of their own personal pet interests. They are just attaching the Trump label to it to sell it easier.
This is “business as usual” and Trump needs to address this and put a stop to it if anything is ever going to change for the better in congress.
“raud in it. root out the fraud, abuse, keep the legit.”
Exactly right. But it needs to be rooted out FIRST before the budget is reduced. They are trying to do it in the wrong order.
Re: 17 - it may not be President Trump’s “bill”, but he is the voice of Republicans in Washington.
Perhaps Speaker Johnson needs to act like a leader of the House instead of following President Trump around like a puppy, which absolutely gives the impression that Johnson defers to him.
The Congress needs to start following its own rules and coming up with actual annual budgets - all these ‘continuing resolutions” do is waste billions upon billions.
Let it shut down and just fund Social Security and Medicare and our own military...
