Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said his country won't accept peacekeeping forces from Nato countries in Ukraine under any peace deal, following high-level talks with the US in Saudi Arabia.
"Any appearance by armed forces under some other flag does not change anything. It is of course completely unacceptable," he said.
Russia and the US said they had agreed to appoint teams to start negotiating the end of the war.
"Today is the first step of a long and difficult journey, but an important one", US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said following the meeting.
Ukraine was not invited to the talks, which its president Volodymyr Zelensky said was a "surprise". The meeting in Riyadh was the first time since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine that Russian and American delegations are known to have met face-to-face.
Also at the meeting in Saudi Arabia were US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, as well as Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov and the head of Russia's sovereign wealth fund, Kirill Dmitriev.
Afterwards, Lavrov said the US and Russia would appoint ambassadors to each other's countries as soon as possible and create conditions to "restore co-operation in full".
"It was a very useful conversation. We listened to each other, and we heard each other," he said.
He reiterated Russia's previous position that any expansion of the Nato defence alliance - and Ukraine joining it - would be a "direct threat" to Russia. Rubio meanwhile said he was "convinced" Russia was "willing to begin to engage in a serious process" to end the conflict.
"There has to be concessions made by all sides. We're not going to predetermine what those are."...

I say this to both sides: F him.
BBC reports. Starmer sad.
Common sense.

Well Duh.
NATO, the US (Biden) and Ukraine has been pushing for NATO forces for years. And they are the reasons why Putin had to push back against this aggression.
You can negotiate a deal with Ukraine to keep the Russians away, but what happens then if they simply absorb Belarus and put themselves right on the Polish border?
Apparently there was no one at the meeting playing the piano with his penis.
Of course they don’t. Was is even on the table?
Perhaps the EU - which is now threatening to send in their own troops to Ukraine - despite the fact they never have previously - will step up and resolve any conflicts that might occur with Poland.
I can’t forecast the future between Russia and Poland, but I can rest assured that Trump - who never made millions off of Poland as Biden did with Ukraine - will not send billions of dollars and NATO aid there only to increase tensions and Biden did in Ukraine.
Peace keepers would only get in the way when Russia resumes the attack after the “deal.” For reference, see the fate of South Vietnam after that “deal.”
What Lavrov meant to say was any expansion of NATO would make Russia’s future planned expansion more difficult.
NATO is the aggressor? Was your post written in Moscow?
NATO. Along with Billions from the US is to blame for this war.
Only a neocon or Zeeper could deny this.
Then Russian troops and Russian proxie-troops should also get out of Ukraine.
Well Duh! What idiot even suggested that? Reality, what a concept?
NATO has been marching aggressively towards Russia for over 30 years.
Smarten up.
President Trump is making peace with Russia.
Freedom in eastern Europe is a bad thing?
Huh?
