U.S. drops website wording on not supporting Taiwan independence
The Japan Times ^

Posted on 02/16/2025 12:09:55 AM PST by USA-FRANCE

The U.S. State Department has removed a statement on its website that it does not support Taiwan independence, among changes that the island's government praised on Sunday as supporting Taiwan. The fact sheet on Taiwan retains Washington's opposition to unilateral change from either Taiwan or from China, which claims the democratically governed island as its own. But as well as dropping the phrase "we do not support Taiwan independence," the page has added a reference to Taiwan's cooperation with a Pentagon technology and semiconductor development project and says the U.S. will support Taiwan's membership in international organizations "where applicable."

The Free Chinese getting some respect. I like it. Chang Kai Shek moved his free Chinese followers to Formosa and formed the Taiwan state during the People’s Revolution on the mainland. Taiwan is independent as far as I’m concerned and the communist can go get effed. IMO

I totally agree.

What Trump did here is actually a revolution in America’s foreign policy affairs. It’s a very big thing.

Yep.

Not only to wipe out non commie chinese there and take over the land, but by grabbing taiwan its part of their 1st chain island strategy which they’d use to force their territorial waters borders out farther to control much of what is now international waters.

There was a chance to recognize Taiwan as a free nation during GWB’s presidency and the wussy didn’t do it. It’s pissed me off for years. Reagan should have done it. This whole issue chaps my ass.

There now I feel better. Not, it still grinds my chops. Thanks anyway. Regards

I’ve met quite a few Taiwanese people in my life, and so far, have not met one I didn’t like. I’m sure there must be one somewhere, but so far, nope.

(Actually, most mainland Chinese are fine too, with some being a bit crazy, but their gov’t has become a BIG problem.)

This DOES affect Europe, as right now we don’t have enough defense resources to go “all in” on both fronts. We still have a big role to play in NATO, but, Euro has to step up.

That said, Trump wants Europe to go to 5% of GDP for defense, and almost all of the Euro’s defense spending is for NATO’s “realm”. Even if the US up defense spending to 3.5%, most of that really is not “for NATO”. Maybe 1.5% would be, and, hey, we have a pretty big “contact” with the North Atlantic Ocean, esp. if we now include the “Gulf of America” and are lusting after Greenland!

In all fairness, unless WE want to be the new slackers, shouldn’t we up our defense spending to 5%?

“ups” not “up”

****************

It won’t happen without massive cuts to the welfare state, which probably isn’t feasible at this time.

It would require high economic growth, luck, and about a decade to reach those numbers. Lower population growth could also be a hurdle in reaching your 5% target.

Even with technological improvements in both the civilian & military sectors, our labor supply could be stretched a bit thin.

Will China take the administration to court and get a liberal looney judge to order it changed?

“There was a chance to recognize Taiwan as a free nation during GWB’s presidency and the wussy didn’t do it.”

Well, that would have caused China to break relations with us.

Hmmmm...never mind.

Before Chang moved his army over there ( to flee the Communists) in 53 the Japanese controlled the island from about 1899. Before that the Dutch were there for a long time. china has never controlled Taiwan, it was occupied by Chang but not owned.Chang took a lot of valuable stuff out of china when he came over. chinese communists would have destroyed it all. Now china wants it all back.
Visit the museums in Taiwan sometime.

That’s nice but Taiwan does not now or has ever claimed to be independent from China. The official Taiwanese stance is that they are China. If they ever declare themselves to be an independent nation, they will have de facto dropped their claim to be the legitimate representatives of China.
