White House says about 75K federal workers accepted 'deferred resignation' offer

WASHINGTON — About 75,000 federal employees have accepted the White House's "deferred resignation" offer to resign but be paid through September, according to a spokesperson for the Office of Personnel Management.

The offer's deadline closed Wednesday after a federal judge ruled to end a temporary pause to the program.

NBC News cannot independently verify the number of employees who took the White House's offer.

The number of federal employees who are reported to have taken the offer amounts to less than 5% of the federal workforce. The administration had set a higher expectation, hoping that 5% to 10% of the federal workforce would accept its offer. The number of employees who accepted the offer was first reported by Semafor.

In fiscal year 2023, the attrition rate of the federal workforce was 5.9%, according to the Partnership for Public Service, a nonprofit organization that promotes government service.

Earlier Wednesday, U.S. District Judge George A. O’Toole Jr. allowed the resignation offer to proceed after having previously issued an order to temporarily halt it. O'Toole said in his ruling Wednesday that the unions that sued to stop the offer did not have the necessary legal standing to bring the case.

The Office of Personnel Management responded to O'Toole's decision Wednesday, saying it was "pleased the court has rejected a desperate effort to strike down the Deferred Resignation Program."

"As of 7:00 PM tonight, the program is now closed," OPM spokesperson McLaurine Pinover said in a statement. "There is no longer any doubt: the Deferred Resignation Program was both legal and a valuable option for federal employees. This program was carefully designed, thoroughly vetted, and provides generous benefits so federal workers can plan for their futures."

The recalcitrant remain, to cause trouble, and if they're fired, do the union/court-battle dance.

But we won't be paying for 75,000 people after September 30th. It's a good start.

Many did not take the offer because the unions effectively threatened them, saying the buyouts were illegal and won’t work.

Once again making it obvious unions are NEVER for the workers!

Coyotes looking out for the Guatemalans - both the unions and the press.

It’s part of the Executive Branch but an independent agency established by law. They are probably not DOGEable.

That’s a mischaracterization. The government is AUTHORIZED to create a postal service, but it is not REQUIRED to do so.

If any organization needs the DOGE touch, it’s the USPS.

There are also those working in departments that are deemed “essential”. Certain activities in the DoD for instance reserve the right to continue to hire to ensure the warfighter is continually supported with no delays to equipment.

I worked at one and I have ex coworkers that want to leave but the offer is not open to them for that reason.

I watched Trump on TV yesterday where there are those work at home fed employees that have second and a few with third jobs. These are the ones refusing to return to work. It is likely they do little to nothing to earn their fed paycheck. Those will be investigated and fired.

When people like this are found, yes fire them. Their supervisors have got to know they produce nothing and should be fired too.

Another statement Trump made was for every fed worker hired four have to resign or get fired.

“Many did not take the offer because the unions effectively threatened them, saying the buyouts were illegal and won’t work.”

Given the behavior of the unions, perhaps the offer should be rerun.

The more workers employed, the more union dues they receive.

At $100,000 each easily, that’s $7,500,000,000.00 easily each year, or $75,000,000,000.00 over the usual 10 year time horizon these things are measured.

A good start!

And think of how much less damage to people and the economy will be done with fewer wreckers in place!

Never mentioned established vs. created.

I wrote that by law it was made an independent agency in the Executive. And one with some fairly interesting rules (by law) such as Board of Governors select Postmaster, etc.

When I was in the union, you didn’t have to be a member but were still required to pay a monthly sum. IIRC, it was almost about the same as what members would pay.

Yeah, that’s all gone since 2018 when the USSC decided Janus v. American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, Council 31.

It was a good deal, better than any buyout anybody I know has ever gotten. The smart ones took it.

Thanks! IIRC, you were still entitled to union representation but weren’t required to be a member.

Those that didn’t accept the offer should be laid off on Oct.1. By then we can figure out who’s unnecessary. Pay them till the end of the year. Clean slate in 2026.

The beauty of this is no one will notice except those laid off. It’s what the rats do.
