Mexico is making further overtures to avert President Donald J. Trump’s imposition of tariffs on exports to America. In their latest move, at President Claudia Sheibaum’s urging, the Mexican Senate approved on Tuesday the entry of a U.S. Special Forces group into the country, ostensibly to train Mexico’s marines as part of the “Strengthening the Capacity of the Special Operations Forces of the Navy” program.

The cartels have strength of around 170,000 heavily armed, trained and vicious men. That is roughly the size of the Viet Cong at any given time and in an area 6 times the size. They have VERY sharp, techie intel formations.

It will take far more than a few SF/SEALs to conquer the cartels.

Yup...going to take more. Especially since the cartels control a lot of politicians in border states.

I think the new Mexican president is more intelligent than the other jerk water cartel affiliated guys they’ve had.
She’s got a PhD in engineering so she’s no dummy.

How long do you think it would take the US military to get rid of the cartels?

“ The cartels are toast.”

That needs to be the goal.

And the Canadian money laundering banks, and Chinese in Canada and China running the operation too.

No idea. But remember how long it took to get rid of Isis once Trump determined it needed to be done? I looked it up...it was like 9 months. The cartels have been designated as terror groups, same as Isis.

The cartels are supposed to have de facto control of much of Mexico’s military. I hope we won’t suffer blowback from this training.

Training Mexican Marines is a good start. They are by far the most loyal and dependable. Carefully vetted, and deployed for from their home areas. Very tough.

If we do this we need to seal the border with a very large conventional force and there needs to be a lot of air assets and armed predator drones.

And if we are REALLY serious, the FBI and Treasury agents need to walk into a couple of banks one Monday morning and take over. Bankers and businesses are laundering one hell of a lot of cartel cash. HSBC, Wells Fargo, BofA, etc.
And those avocados you eat?

When we attack the money, I’ll know we are serious.

That would depend on how cut loose the order will be.

It will eventually become guerilla warfare, because it would go urban.

Like A10s and air superiority ? How about Predator and Reaper drones...Satellite Imagery ?

They may have small arms and a few biger things.

Going to get interesting.

Isis was a ragtag joke, compared to the cartels. The cartels can be rated as paramilitary, because they’ve been trained to that point.

Having said that, if the military is allowed to cut loose, you could see a lot of cartel members abandoning their gangs within a few weeks.

I absolutely believe this is going to happen. I think the folks to do it either are or will in place shortly. SF trains and embeds with local forces, provides logistics etc... This will be Mexico's battle on the ground (with some help), I imagine we'll provide air support. All my opinion of course.

I have a feeling that it’s going to take military intervention to deal with them in the US too.
They’ve been in Oregon for at least 30 years. Worst thing I saw was a hispanic guy with both his hands chopped off. I guess there was another in a ditch in the same area with no head. They also threatened to blow up the house of a cop I know and eventually he was found dead in his front yard.

Cartels rely on a group of people buying their drugs, groups of people needing their workers, and poor people willing to flee failed and corrupt countries. That means the cartels will never go away.

So, throw drug users in jail, or make legal. Throw employees who hire illegals in jail, or make working here easier via visas, and or fix failed countries who are corrupt and the their areas where people flee from.

Mexico is about three times the size of Afghanistan, covered in jungles, forests, mountains, deserts and farmland.
How long did it take us to get rid of the Taliban?

It would take several years, and a solid effort. It would probably be worth it. But it’s a conventional war and needs more than a few SOF type things. And it would need to be combined with a seriously closed border, IRS enforcement attacks on our bankers, and a dedicated PR effort, not just lip service that we are “rescuing” Mexico.
As trite as it sounds, we need to convince the locals that this is self protection for us AND a rescue of them.
They are a truly decent people utterly held hostage by the cartels.

Normal Mexicans hate it as much as anyone, but are mostly helpless.
