US cannot guarantee security of Europe, says Pentagon chief
The Times (UK) ^ | February 12 2025 | Larisa Brown, Bruno Waterfield

America cannot be relied upon to guarantee the security of Europe from Russia because it has to focus on its own borders and the threat of China, President Trump’s defence secretary told Nato leaders on Wednesday.

In remarks that experts said would “rock” Nato, Pete Hegseth used his first speech on the world stage to rule out using US troops to uphold a peace deal in Ukraine.

Speaking at Nato headquarters in Brussels, Hegseth said the US would block any Nato involvement in the conflict or resolution. Pressure will instead fall on Britain and France to lead any peacekeeping force, which will have to be significant enough to defend against Russia should a deal crumble. He also ruled out Nato membership for Ukraine as part of any peace deal.

Can we now admit "the special relationship" is over?
Let it stay over.

Doesn’t sound like Trump’s pick is a big fan of z or WASTING more money in Ukraine.

And he wants NO MEN over there.

Thank goodness.

I don’t know why Ukraine didn’t just say NO to NATO right away.

I saw the Russian invasion coming a mile away with that offer and a presumptive YES in response.

Countries don’t like their enemy putting or being able to put nukes at their doorstep.

Hence that whole Cuba thing where we almost went to war.

Putin is a shady character..and he DOES miss the USSR and communism. And he kills domestic oppenents from time to time.

Europe is big enough to handle him without the US.

Now, it has no choice.

I don’t understand why NATO even exists anymore - this was an alliance created to oppose a nation which ceased to exist 35 years ago. The largest remnant of the Soviet Union - Russia - is an empty shell of a nation with a shrinking population and an economy that has been left in the dust by China and India. If the nations of Europe think that a military alliance is still needed to resist a Russia which grows more feeble with each day, they can form it without my tax dollars.

It’s not just the “special relationship” with Britain, NATO is over.

Nor should it. The EU has gone woke, with censorship, environmental extremism, LGBT, and socialism. A Russian takeover would do them a favor.

Russia’s botched invasion over the past 3 years is all the proof that’s needed that China is the real threat and Russia can be dealt with by Europe.

Time for Europe to show that there’s something behind all their bold talk and actions against Russia. I figure twice is enough times for Europe to drag the US into a global war.

Never in the EU history have they produced such weak, brain dead leaders. Mostly woman, and men acting as woman, the product of DEI, unlimited immigration, and climate fools……time to pay the piper and endorse Trump’s “ new age of Common Sense”.

They are reaping what they have sown- I shed no tears.

NATO and the Warsaw pact existed to keep the Europeans from starting round III.

Both sides neutered the military of their respective client states.

That ended.

The US can either commit to a new world war, or retrench and let Europe fall from the south or the east.

Russia’s botched invasion over the past 3 years
————-
Vlad has accomplished his clearly stated goals from day one. Liberate the ethnic Russian provinces, No NATO, future neutrality ( by Rada - Congressional Decree).

Vlad does what he says. Next time you will not blindly support a senile , corrupted old man. I laugh at everyone that was sucked in so easily, a crime Ukraine had to be all but destroyed, for nothing but to fill Ukrainian pockets.

Next up, post war analysis- ALL of the western MSM lies and omissions will be revealed.

Before this 4 years is over, Trump will severely limit our participation in NATO and shift the burden to the European nations so we can focus on China and our own hemisphere. Hegseth’s comments are a reflection of that.It can’t happen too soon.

Nor should we be. Europe has had 80 years to guarantee their own security. Most member nations in NATO can’t even come up with the agreed on 2% of their gross national product to fund their own defense. Losers. None of them learned the lessons of two world wars. Idiots never even did anything about being dependent on Russia for their energy products all this time.

"the past 3 years is all the proof that’s needed that China is the real threat..."

It didn't take the war for people to know that. China and Iran are our two biggest enemies, and have been for many years.

It’s sad really how they abuse their own people in favor of those they imported as replacements.

It’s not just the leaders who are weak it’s the people too. Same thing here. Fat kids with carpal tunnel at 18 offended at anything they don’t agree with.

I know, Sweden and Finland should have said no as soon as they saw Russia special military operationing Ukraine, but they didn't... Did you foresee Russia special military operationing them from a mile away?
