WASHINGTON — President Trump says it’s too early to know if he will anoint Vice President JD Vance as his successor in 2028.

Fox News anchor Bret Baier asked Trump, 78, in an interview taped ahead of Sunday’s Super Bowl, “Do you view Vice President JD Vance as your successor, the Republican nominee in 2028?”

“No, but he’s very capable,” Trump replied.

“I think you have a lot of very capable people. So far I think he’s doing a fantastic job. It’s too early. We’re just starting.”

A little soon for this type of question. Ask Trump again 2 years from now.

On the surface this appears to not support Vance very much. However Trump likes mind games, so who knows.

No problem at all with the head coach saying his player is not ready for the big game yet, but he’s getting there as long as he beats the competition during practices.

Look at it this way, if Trump did pick Vance (or anyone else), then he loses the support of the 2028 wannabees. In particular, he’d lose people like Rubio, who is OBVIOUSLY sucking up to Trump for his chance at the big prize. Might be true of Noem and even some members of Congress.

Best to have them think that they all have a chance.

The headline is misleading of course. He’s simply saying it’s early and it is.

Sounds like he doesn’t NECESSARILY see him as successor.

He needs for the others to keep trying to win his favor. It’s how one keeps them in line. Basic politics.

Keeps the Dems guessing...Certainly a mind game...That’s Trump. The dems are such suckers for this move. Should promote at least 10 articles from our Dem Media. It’s called flushing.

Agree. In politics, four years is several lifetimes.

There are a lot of true patriots in his cabinet. Any one of them would be good successors.

President Trump is too smart to get locked into a prediction like that.

No it is a legitimate rational response. I been President 3 weeks. It far far far too early to be picking a successor based on only being on the job 3 weeks

Right now it's JD at #1 and DeSantis at #2.

It's clear that JD has more charisma. And it appears that he is better at campaigning.

Now having said that, DeSantis has experience as an executive of a large state. JD was a Senator. Now he's #2. So technically, DeSantis is more qualified than JD.

Just my two cents.

Trump never respected Pence and as it turned out for good reason.

I don’t think he has that much respect for Vance either and time will tell if that too is for good reason.

BTW Baier confirmed his clown reputation with that question. Hundreds of serious question to be asked and he asked that moronic clickbait question. Just a moronic move by Baier

That's a pretty fair answer.

It's far too early to be talking about the 2028 election.

Most of it will be on how Vance performs over the next four years. Some people grow as President, like Trump. Others will shrink, like Bidon.

I am hoping that Vance grows, because he is very solid.

He's part of the Romney type ant-MAGA Fox News establishment -- taking the mantle of Brit Hume -- and getting on my nerves.
