Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations Bob Rae criticized President Trump over his recent comments and actions regarding Canada, saying the country deserves to be “treated with respect.”
Rae joined Fox News’s Bret Baier for “Special Report” on Monday, just days after the president signed an executive order that imposed a 25 percent tariff on Canada. Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau later came to an agreement to hold the tariffs for a month, but the trade war and its impact on the countries has caused much concern across the country.
“The concern that I think all Canadians have, it’s not a personal thing about President Trump, the concern we have is that we don’t want any administration making and taking decisions that are going to create insecurity, uncertainty and real collapses in the market … in a way that’s quite arbitrary,” Rae said.
Rae said Canadian officials are looking to have a “reasonable and sensible” discussion about how to move forward.
Trump’s order also impacts Mexico and China. The president has defended the tariffs as a means to encourage U.S. trading partners to help stop the flow of migrants and fentanyl across the southern and northern borders.
In remarks from the Oval Office on Monday, Trump doubled down on his proposal that Canada join the United States as the 51st state of the U.S. The comment has drawn sharp criticism from Canadian officials, who state the country is sovereign and has no plans to merge with the U.S.
“We’re not the 51st state. We’re a sovereign, independent country,” Rae said. “Our leader deserves to be treated with respect and we deserve to be treated with respect, and that’s the way we want to proceed.

Whining to the UN won’t get you any respect, bub.
Canada hasn’t been a serious country since the 1970’s, so they will have to start getting serious if they want to be respected.
You say this as a Canadian? (Just curious)
The Left: “If you don’t agree with me, you don’t respect me. (”There’s only one way to think and that is MY Leftist way.”)
The Right falls for that stuff sometimes.
No, Mr Ambassador, your leader is a feckless pretty-boy communist dictator, and your beautiful and bountiful nation has been a mismanaged poor cousin since its founding.
And should be treated by that measure.
Canada, it’s America’s hat.
Respect is EARNED not demanded.
What do you mean some times? Fall for it most of the time!
Bob Rae? He’s still around?
Those of us living in Ontario still remember the way he ran the province into the ground, when he was in charge between ‘90 and ‘95...
Yeah, someone saying that “Canada deserves respect!” has about as much moral urgency, and deserves to receive the same amount of consideration as someone in the average YouTube arrest video, who demands the cops “respeck” them.
(and I say this as a shame-faced Canadian).
you want respect
give it
secure your border
an insecure border is more than disrespect
it is an fu
OK, I think you’re right - most of the time.
The only ones that don’t fall for that nonsense are true Patriots and lovers of America’s Free Constitutional Republic.
Some Canadians deserve to be treated with respect, Bob, but you ain’t one of them. You decimated Ontario when you were Premier. You’re a government grifter extraordinaire.
Just like the respect you gave him 2016-20 right?
Why? In fact, I will be praying that God gives the ruling class everything it deserves.
Yup - I remember Bob Rae and his destruction of Ontario. He was already collecting five government pensions back then. He’s your typical leftist trough feeder.
I say this as an Albertan, whose province was punished in the 1970’s with the National Energy Program which was the federal liberal’s attempt to gain control of Alberta’s resources and the federal government has been throwing up obstacles in Alberta’s way to economically develop in order so the Laurentian liberals that control Canada don’t lose control. They want control of Alberta’s oil so they can lift the wealth and send it down east.
The NEP cost Alberta at least $67 billion dollars.
When they do enough damage to disrepair Alberta’s economy, they point the finger at Alberta and say we should have done better.
In short, it’s the same strategy the British used against the Irish in the 1700-1800’s. The British oppressed the Irish economy. Then when Ireland went through it’s potato famine and millions died, the British let the Irish suffer through it.
When they have drained Alberta of all its wealth, they will abandon Alberta and tell us that we should have done better.
Do you understand now?
